West Haven gets new scoreboards, bleachers

WEST HAVEN ? The new West Haven ?Sports Park,? home of the Wasatch Front Football League, has come of age since the city installed new electronic scoreboards and the latest design in bleachers.

Construction of the 18-acre park began in 2006.

According to Councilwoman Sharon Bolos, there used to be some old-style bleachers at the park, but not permanent structures.

The park also used portable scoreboards.

?When my boys first stated playing football two years ago, I couldn?t even find the scoreboard,? Bolos said. ?When I spotted it in the corner of the field, I thought, ?We have got to get scoreboards here.? ?

That started the ball rolling.

Bolos asked Brock Randall, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, to look into the cost for new equipment. With the backing of the city council and Mayor Brian Melaney, Randall applied for and received a RAMP grant from Weber County.

The city added two new scoreboards and three permanent bleachers to the Sports Park, at 4215 S. 3900 West. The total cost of the project was $88,000, half paid by the RAMP grant and the other half matched by the city, along with impact fees.

?We have football teams and visitors come from the top of Cache County and Box Elder County down through Davis County and, the new scoreboards and bleachers are a great addition to the park. It really makes our West Haven Grizzlies football players feel like they have a great place to call their home turf,? Randall said.

Bolos said, ?I am so excited about these new additions to the park because they accentuate our amazing football program. Our facility was great to begin with, and now West Haven stands out as one of the best football locations in the league.?

The park also has a tennis court, soccer field, softball field, a bowery with attached utility building, a walking path, state-of the art playground, and a large parking lot.

Randall said the park is nearly complete, but officials plan to add more parking space, more grass and a possible recreation building.

Randall said the city is adding advertising panels to both scoreboards. Anyone interested in advertising at the Sports Park can call Randall at 801-430-1517.
