Greetings,--The main problem I have with Google Finance is the lack of automatic
dividend reinvestment calculations. ?Many people who own individual
stocks elect for Dividend Reinvestment Plans. ?Google Finance has
access to the historical splits and dividends of most stocks. ?It
would be an easy step to add the ability to enter an initial stock
purchase (number of shares, date, and price) and elect for automatic
DRIP calculation. It should also be possible to calculate the data in reverse (i.e.
enter current stock shares [including decimals] with an "as of" date
and elect to calculate the historical number of shares for those who
had a DRIP elected continuously since initial purchase. ?For those of
us who have held stocks for many years and may have lost the initial
purchase data (whoops - I have one such), this would allow a glimpse
into the past when our stock was at a "whole number" and would give
insight into when the investment was initially purchased. For the splits, mergers and acquisitions -- it appears Google has the
data to allow for the development of more complex tools. ?Anyone who
purchased Lucent stock before October 2000 should know what I am
talking about....2 October 2000: Lucent split into Lucent and Avaya (1 share of Avaya
for every 12 shares of Lucent; fractional leftovers into cash)
1 June 2002: Lucent split into Lucent and Agere (crazy math including
Agere A, Agere B, etc.)
One hour of research and two (company website provided PDF) forms
later, I have a flow chart of headaches. We all have to deal with taxes - why not use the vast information
Google has access to in order to develop Google Finance into a tool
that allow for accurate portfolio tracking. Also, provide a place on the portfolio trackers to allow folks to add
their own notes (e.g. sell triggers, things to watch for, etc.)Respectfully,
A devout Google fan,
Joe
