Tribal Libraries Program Coordinator (DCA #4284)

Purpose:

To manage the multi-faceted Tribal Libraries Program that consults with libraries at Pueblo, Navajo and Apache tribal sites statewide to develop and strengthen library services to their communities. The position provides training and consulting to tribal library directors, staff, board members, and volunteers in all areas of librarianship, promotes advocacy for tribal libraries, and coordinates with NMSL staff to manage the Tribal Libraries? state-funded grants and GO Bond allocations. This position requires travel throughout the state, especially to tribal communities. This position also requires a Master?s Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), and a copy of transcripts must be included in the online application process.

Primary Job Assignments:

Provide consulting, training, and problem-solving guidance in all areas of librarianship to directors, staff, board members, and volunteers in tribal libraries throughout the state. (40%)

- Keep in contact with tribal libraries, with a focus on consulting, problem-solving, and two-way communication with NMSL via site visits, meetings, phone calls, and e-mail, on a scheduled or as-needed basis.

- Coordinate with the Continuing Education Coordinator to identify ways to meet training needs in all areas of librarianship, such as cataloging, reference, youth services, planning, reporting, programming, grant writing, library administration, and technology, as well in areas of specific concern to tribal libraries, such as indigenous property rights and language preservation.

- Establish priorities and provide services that support Development Bureau initiatives and that respond to needs of the tribal library communities.

- Coordinate with NMSL staff to implement State Library initiatives such as digital literacy training, summer reading program, Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, etc. at tribal libraries.

Promote advocacy for tribal libraries (25%)

- Provide marketing and public awareness information to develop effective outreach to ensure that the tribal library community, tribal and other government agencies, the legislature, elected leaders and the general public are aware of the full range of TLP services and their benefits.

- Work directly with tribal agencies and organizations, such as Indian Affairs Department (IAD), Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC), Navajo Nation Technology Committees, Indigenous Language Institute (ILI).

- Meet with Tribal Leadership (Governors, Representatives, and Council members), as appropriate.

- Provide consulting and training services on cultural heritage and language preservation and promotion to staff at all New Mexico public libraries.

- Have knowledge of the functions and structure of tribal libraries and tribal entities under which the tribal library is organized.

Coordinate with NMSL staff to manage the state-funded grant programs and GO Bonds for tribal libraries (15%)

- Provide guidance to tribal libraries with annual reporting to the NMSL, as needed

- Coordinate the GO Bond and state aid processes with Tribal Libraries.

Assess the library needs of the community served by the Training and Outreach Center in Crownpoint, New Mexico and develop a strategic plan to address its role in meeting needs of the community. (20%)

- Supervise the Center?s Library Technician ? Advanced full-time position which includes preparing evaluations, travel budgets and reporting.
