Japan 'Arigato' event launched in London

Japan 'Arigato' event launched in London

A 15-day event began in London in Saturday to show Japan's gratitude for the support and encouragement it received from around the world following the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year. Former professional soccer player Hidetoshi Nakata, one of the organizers of the "Arigato in London" event, said, "We want to express our gratitude [to the world] and show progress in Japan's efforts for restoration."

The event, which runs through Aug. 11, features photos of the disaster-hit Tohoku region, videos shown in many languages to express the country's gratitude, and Japanese dance and traditional drum performances.

It's summer in Japan, which means shaved ice, cold noodles and parasols against the blinding sun - for men. While women have used sun umbrellas, or "higasa," for centuries, power conservation and increasingly hot summers have sent sales of men's sun umbrellas sharply higher, with department stores across Japan scrambling for stocks. whatwasthatone: Automotive Movie

There was this movie we watched in school (so...late 90s early 00s is when I watched it, it's probably older). It was about an entrepreneur, the automotive industry and I think I little bit of reference to an assembly line. This guy made/designed this car. This took place back when cars were still starting to become popular (20s? 30s? maybe? not sure, was never good with dates). He made a prototype and it wasn't quite done in time. There was him and his crew rushing to at least make I think the car move onto the platform or something for the buyers. The only thing I remember about the car was it looked like the cars of the age (something like this) and it had a trunk in the front and the motor in the back ("where it should be" said the advertisement). Some contract was reached and he had to make 50 or 200 of these types of cars (this is where I think the assembly line came in). There was some legal case involved. I think about him not being able to reach the deadline or something. But he did make the deadline and all the cars were taken to the court house and parked outside and I remember the guy saying "if you would just look outside!". The people in the court hesitated. At the end of the movie it was all "based on a true story" and it revealed that only the 50 or 200 were made of his car. It was a pretty cool story but I don't remember the name of it. Ideas?

Checkers - 2 players brings simple, classical, gaming fun to iPad

Checkers - 2 players brings simple, classical, gaming fun to iPad

Checkers - 2 players comes from Pacific Helm's dynamic trio of Louis Mantia, Brad Ellis, and Jessie Char, and if you're familiar with their design work, you're likely ignoring this preamble and already downloading. Fair enough. If you're not familiar with their design work, either you've never used software by Apple, Square, Rogue Sheep, the Iconfactory, and Tapulous, or you just don't know how familiar with their work you really are...

Pacific Helm typically does design work for other companies these days, but Checkers - 2 players is the first in what's hopefully a long string of apps and games all their own.

The premise is simple -- Checkers - 2 players is nothing more or less than a virtual checker board set you can carry around, and play with a friend, on your iPad. There's no artificial intelligence to play against, and inevitably train to take over the world. There's just a selection of boards and colors for the pieces, and the classic mechanics of the game.

Move. Jump. Capture. King. Win.

But in style.

It's $4.99 which isn't cheap when it comes to App Store games. That's a good thing. Because at "cheap" this game doesn't get made. Indie developers and designers don't do projects like these. We don't get elegant, beautiful stuff to enjoy. We don't get art.

And that's what this is. That checker set with the plush, inlaid board and perfectly moulded pieces that came in that fancy box you were only allowed to play with on special occasions. Only Checkers - 2 players comes on your iPad, goes wherever your iPad goes, can change colors at the tap of a settings, and can be played whenever you have a partner handy.

Simple. Elegant. Classical. Fun.

Grab it now.

Joseph Bonanno (Head Bonanno Crime Family) By Asher Sarnoff ...

Joseph Bonanno was born on January 18 1905, in Castellammare del Golfo, Italy. He came from a well to do, ?powerful family, but lost both his parents at an early age. He was an orphan by the age of 16

He was a man of many different sides. He was a boss of the Bonanno crime family for close to 30 years, he is also one of the few bosses allowed to retire or who wasn?t killed by others or those in his own family. ?He also published his memoirs toward the end of his life. ?His book was later read and used by up and comer Rudolph Giuliani to later attempt to dismantle organized crime families as well as lead authorities to a better understanding of how some families were structured.

In 1908 Bonanno moved to Brooklyn with his family, into an area where other Sicilians also lived. His father opened two businesses. A pasta factory and a tavern. Here Bonanno?s father was quickly recognized as a man of honor and was referred to by others in the neighborhood as??Don Turridru.?

By the age of 7, Bonanno would move back to Sicily after a short stay in America. He later said this might have been because of a clash with another rival family in Italy. The family may have been moved for their own safety. After returning Sicliy, Bonanno?s father was drafted into the Italian army and fought and was wounded while on the front in Austria, in World War one. He died of his wounds shortly after returning home in December of 1915. His mother would die five years later leaving him an orphan.

around the age of?16, he took what he needed from his inheritance and went to Trapiani to a naval?preparatory?school for one year before going on to Joeni Trabia Nautical Institute in Palermo. He wanted to be a leader of men. He later would be, but not in the way he thought. As Benito Mussolini began his rise to power in the early twenties, Bonanno who was anti-Mussolini was suspended from school when it was found out that he as an anti-fascist activist. He had to flee or risk being captured and tortured by Mussolini?s forces.

In 1924, Bonanno decided to come back to America, he entered the country illegally from Cuba into Florida. He was later bailed out of a detention center he had been sent to by friends in the United States. He ended up coming to Brooklyn and staying with relatives for a brief time before going on his own.

Bonanno quickly decided to get involved in bootlegging as many others were doing and getting rich doing it. He was also arrested during this time for gun running but the charges were dropped. Bonanno also showed his business acument during this period, further expanding the families businesses and his own bootlegging and rum running operations.

After a time, Bonanno came to the attention of one of the most powerful bosses in New York City at that time. Salvatore Maranzano. He began to work as an enforcer for Maranzano and would later run some of his bootlegging operations. Bonanno would also be invaluable to Maranazano in the upcoming conflict he would have with Giuseppe Masseria his main rival in New York. This war was called the ?Castellammarese War?. At the end of this war Lucky Luciano would be all powerful after he killed both Masseria and Maranzano within six months of each other.

By the age of 26 Joseph Bonanno found himself the leader of the Bonanno crime family, one of the five families in New York and he also held a seat on the Commission, set up by Lucky Luciano to handle all matters between the five families. In a short period of time, through hard work and circumstance. Bonanno was one of the most powerful bosses in New ?York City.

Soon after this time, Bonanno married his long time sweetheart Fay Abruzzo and had three children. Salvatore, in 1932, Catherine in 1934 and Joseph Jr. in 1945. Bonanno suffered some health concerns having a heart attack in 1951in Arizona where the family later would buy a home to be near there son who was in boarding school out there for a while. In 1945 Bonanno also became a U.S. Citizen, something he would almost lose in 1953 when the government sought to void his citizenship, claiming he lied about a 450 dollar fine he was issued at one of his ?garment businesses in ?the 40?s. The case was later dismissed.

in 1956, two of New York?s five families were united in marriage when Bonanno?s son Bill wed mob boss Joseph Profaci?s niece Rosalie Profaci. It was a huge wedding with thousands of guests. Bonanno spared no expense on this wedding brought two of the cities five families closer together than they had ever been. The wedding was held at the Astor Hotel and had a who?s who of entertainers including Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The reception was attended by over 3000 people as well as mob notables like Albert Anastasia, Frank Costello, Vito Genovese and others.

Joseph Bonanno unlike his counterpart Lucky Luciano, kept a low profile, it wasn?t until 1957, in the fallout of the Albert Anastasia murder and subsequent Applachian meeting that turned into a debacle that Bonanno ran into trouble. He was briefly arrested after the Appalachian meeting which he hadn?t even attended. He was charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice in 1959 and indicted. He never stood trial for this charge, a second heart attack got the case dismissed or he may have had inside help, that is unclear but the government dropped the charges against him.

Over the years Joseph Bonanno strived for credibility and respect. He opened other legitimate businesses such as a cheese factory and an undertakers business. It was later alleged it was Bonanno who created the ?Double Coffin?, a special coffin that was set up so that another body could be placed under the original body in the casket, thus getting rid of two bodies instead of one.

In 1963, Bonanno was named by Joseph Valachi in his testimony before a senate subcommittee as one of the major crime bosses of the five families. Bonano?s problems with the law would be compounded after a later trip to Canada where he was arrested for lying on his immigration card application again. ?After spending several days in a Canadian prison he was released and no charges were filed. This was his first experience being locked in Jail and he would later say this experience was very unnerving to him.

On October 21st, 1964, Bonanno was allegedly confronted and abducted by two armed men. He was soon to have to testify in court before a federal grand jury. Some?hypothesized?it was actually Bonanno who had himself kidnapped, the F.B.I. seemed to think that he was kidnapped to stop the power struggle within organized crime that had been going on for some time. Bonanno in his autobiography claims he was kidnapped by men working for his cousin Steffano Maggadino ?whom he was estranged from for some time. It is alleged by Bonanno that Maggadino was working with the Lucchesse and Carlo Gambino. After being held for several weeks he was released, some say he had to promise to retire from organized crime in order not to be killed by his captors. That story however is not verified. Right after his release he appointed his son Bill as his second in command, a move that angered many in the family who saw Bill as someone of privilege and who had not earned his stripes on the street. After being released Bonanno went into hiding. His son Bill and others tried to hold the family together. The commission had appointed long time friend and confidant Gaspar DiGregorio to run the family in Bonanno?s absence but apparently Bonnano did not accept the commissions ruling. The fight between these two forces came to be known as the ?Banana War?. Bonanno?s son Bill narrowly escaped being killed in January, 1966.

In May of 1966 Joseph Bonanno came out of hiding and surrendered himself to authorities to face the obstruction of justice charges he had leveled against him in 1964 for failing to appear in front of a federal grand jury that at the time was investigating organized crime. ?This charge was later postponed indefinitely in 1971.

In 1968, Bonanno had his third heart attack and purportedly retired to Tuscon Arizona where the family had a home. Bill had attended boarding school there as a youth. Paul Sciacca took over the Bonanno Family at this time. Bonanno is one of the few family heads ever allowed to retire. It was a rare thing. ?Later that year Bonanno?s home was damaged by a bomb. It was later alleged this bomb had been planted by the F.B.I. to further stir up organized crime tensions between families.

Bonanno had to deal with close F.B.I. scrutiny even after retirement. In 1980 he was arrested on charges of obstruction of justice charges in relation to a money laundering scheme that was run by his two sons. ?He was later found guilty of conspiracy to interfere with a grand jury. After some health delays he was sentenced to five years in prison. The sentence was later reduced and he only served 8 months in prison, beginning in December of 1983. This was his first offense for which he did any kind of extended prison time.

In the same year, 1983, Joseph Bonanno did what no other boss had done before. He released his memoirs. The book was entitled ?A man of Honor.? The book was co-written with writer Sergio Lalli. The book played up his Sicilian roots and its traditions while also touting his business acumen. In the book Bonanno does admit to bootlegging, loansharking and other traditional mob rackets. He does not admit to his family being one of the principal providers of Heroin into the United States in the late sixties and 70?s period. Many have alleged it was Carmine Galanted a high level capo in the Bonanno family who secured many of the drug pipelines that fed the families Heroin business. Bonanno denied in his book that his family ever dealt in prostitution or narcotics sales. Both of these rackets in fact the family did profit from.

Bonanno?s book caught the eye of many Americans who are fascinated by organized crime figures. The book also came to the attention of one Rudolph Giuliani who would use what he learned in the book to go after other families. In 1985 Giuliani and Michael Chertoff wanted Bonanno to testify about the commission in a case they were trying. Bonnano?s lawyer argued his client was in ill health and could not testify. Bonanno was locked up for 14 months in a federal medical facility for refusing to testify. In November of 1986 he was released and went back to his home in Tuscon.

Bonanno?s 90th birthday celebration was quite an affair drawing many notable people including Gay Talese and others, over 300 people attended the event. In 1999 Showtime aired a show entitled Bonanno ?A Godfather?s Story?. Several actors played Bonanno in different stages of his life including Martin Landau and the show was produced by his son Bill.

Shortly after the release of Bonanno on Showtime, Bonanno suffered a stroke and his health quickly declined. He died on May 11th, 2002. He will be remembered for leading one of the original five families through tumultuous times and was one of the few bosses ever allowed to retire with no consequences

Rio Ferdinand charged with improper conduct by FA

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:29 a.m. ET July 31, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was charged by the Football Association on Monday with improper conduct for comments about Chelsea rival Ashley Cole in a twist to the fallout from John Terry's racism trial.

Terry was cleared in court of racially abusing Ferdinand's brother, Queens Park Rangers defender Anton, while playing for Chelsea in a Premier League match last October.

Cole, who along with the Ferdinands is black, appeared in court as a defense witness this month. A day after the verdict, Rio Ferdinand appeared to endorse a tweet describing Cole as a "choc ice," a slang term perceived as meaning black on the outside and white on the inside.

Ferdinand tweeted: "I hear you fella! Choc ice is classic hahahahahaha!!"

Ferdinand later tweeted that it was "not a racist term. It's a type of slang/term used by many for someone who is being fake."

Cole said he didn't plan to complain. But Ferdinand, a former England captain, is now facing a fine or ban after being charged by the FA.

"The allegation is that the player acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute by making comments which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or color and/or race," the FA said in a statement.

Ferdinand failed to make England's squad for the European Championship squad in June and July, even after several defenders were ruled out because of injury. He has until Thursday to respond to the charge.

Terry is also the subject of an FA investigation after being charged by the governing body with the racism allegations. He was cleared of those allegations at Westminster Magistrates' Court this month.

Terry denies the charge, saying he only used the offensive term sarcastically to counter the profanity he claims Ferdinand was accusing him of using.

In a separate soccer racism case on Monday, an employment tribunal ruled that a black soccer player was unfairly fired by fourth-tier club Gillingham after being racially victimized.

Former Barbados international player Mark McCammon took legal action against the club after being dismissed for alleged misconduct last year.

McCammon claimed black players at the club were treated differently from white players. He said he was ordered to come into the club's ground when it was snowing and driving conditions were treacherous while some white players were told they weren't required to attend.

He also told the tribunal that the southeast England club refused to pay private medical bills to help him regain fitness following an injury. By contrast, he said a white teammate was flown to Dubai for treatment at the club's expense.

"Today we have received the decision of the Ashford Employment Tribunal, which sets out their findings that Mark McCammon was unfairly dismissed and that his dismissal was an act of racial victimization," Gillingham said in a statement. "We are hugely disappointed, in fact staggered, by this decision."

Two sources talk of Apple iPhone event around September 12th, part sales back it up (update: one more clue)

iPhone 2012 shell

Apple's plans for its next iPhone refresh may be getting very tangible, very quickly. It all started when iMore heard that Apple was preparing to hold an event unveiling the new hardware on September 12th, with a launch the following week on September 21st. Although the relative newcomer to the iPhone release date rumor game is still building its track record, that claim may have just gotten some extra meat: AllThingsD is joining in the chorus and touts its own sources pointing to an event in the same timeframe. While it's almost a month earlier in the year than Apple's iPhone 4S event was in 2011, it's supported by an Apple filing with the SEC showing a sharp uptick in supply purchasing during the spring, which it would need to start production for the fall. All of it is still rumor, of course, but past experience suggests that iOS fans may want to plan any September camping trips for the Apple Store line late in the month, not Labor Day weekend.

Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, who's well-known for his accurate one-word confirmations and denials of rumors, just posted his trademark "yep."

Ninja Communication Skills

Sunday, July 29th, 2012 at 12:04 am ?

Did you watch the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony on Friday night?

I was chatting to Chelsea (my life-partner) about it this morning and we both noted how fun it was to experience the richness of British culture watching the Queen, Mr. Bean and James Bond during the opening ceremony?

Ever noticed how when you visit some countries, you feel pulled into a magical reality, rich with meaning?

?while other countries have cultures that feel flat, repressed or shallow?

You may not have thought about it, but your relationship also has a culture?

The two of you give off a ?vibe? that others can pick up on. And because you spend so much time with your chosen mate, the culture in your relationship will largely determine how your life turns out, so this is an important distinction.

Having said that, the question that begs is:

Is the culture in your relationship one that feels welcoming, exciting, and warm with the intimacy that comes from being fully known and deeply seen by your lover?

OR

?is the culture of your relationship one that feels heavy, cold and unsafe, where you both tiptoe around on eggshells to avoid provoking each other?

Which more accurately describes your relationship?

You most likely relate to both, depending on where you are in your lives together.

At one point, the culture in Chelsea and my relationship was like the culture of a war torn country ? cold, hard and deserted. It seemed like every communication turned into a fight ? every bid for love was seen as an attack.

I had to do something, because despite all my communication skills learned as an internationally acclaimed speaker and trainer, I still could not accomplish the simple task of getting the woman that I loved to respond to me.

The highest leverage point for creating
a ?culture of intimacy? in your relationship?

The culture in your relationship is determined by your ability to communicate with your partner in a way that resolves conflict and creates intimacy.

Of course, this skill was never taught to us as we were growing up, so most of us feel emotionally shipwrecked when conflict arises during the Power Struggle stage of our relationship.

I know I did.

I discovered that the communication skills required to get me into a relationship were very different from those required to get me through the Power Struggle stage of a relationship.

So I began devouring every book and course I could find on communication and conflict resolution? And in the process, Chelsea and I learned a new set of communication skills that saved our relationship.

A pleasant side-effect of using these skills has been that we?ve created a culture of acceptance, unconditional love and mutual respect in our relationship, without actually setting out specifically to do so.

Elusive gene that causes a form of blindness from birth dlscovered

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division and their collaborators have isolated an elusive human gene that causes a common form of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a relatively rare but devastating form of early-onset blindness. The new LCA gene is called NMNAT1. Finding the specific gene mutated in patients with LCA is the first step towards developing sight-saving gene therapy.

LCA is an inherited retinal degenerative disease characterized by reduced vision in infancy. Within the first few months of life, parents usually notice a lack of visual responsiveness and unusual roving eye movements known as nystagmus. LCA typically involves only vision problems, but can be accompanied by disease in other organ systems in a minority of patients. LCA is a common reason children are enrolled in schools for the blind.

"The immediate benefit of this discovery is that affected patients with mutations in this new LCA gene now know the cause of their condition," said Eric Pierce, M.D., Ph.D., co-senior author and director of the Ocular Genomics Institute at Mass. Eye and Ear. "Scientists now have another piece to the puzzle as to why some children are born with LCA and decreased vision. The long-term goal of our research is to develop therapies to limit or prevent vision loss from these disorders."

NMNAT1 is the 18th identified LCA gene. The gene resides in a region that was known to harbor an LCA gene since 2003, but the specific disease gene has been undiscovered until now. These findings will be published on July 29 in the online edition of Nature Genetics.

To identify NMNAT1, scientists performed whole exome sequencing of the family of two siblings who initially presented for evaluation of LCA but who had no mutations in any of the known LCA genes. Being seen by a multi-disciplinary team that took the case from careful clinical characterization to genetic testing to the research laboratory was an essential ingredient for success.

"By using whole exome sequencing, we found a mutation in a gene that no one could have predicted would be associated with LCA," said Dr. Pierce.

"Whereas most of the known LCA genes involve dysfunction of retinal ciliary proteins necessary for light detection in the eye, NMNAT1 is uniquely distinguished by being the first metabolic enzyme linked to LCA," said Marni J. Falk, M.D., co-first author and Clinical Geneticist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Having found a mutation in NMNAT1 in this one family, the investigators next asked if mutations in NMNAT1 also cause disease in other patients with LCA. Screening of 284 unrelated patients with LCA from the United States, England, France and India allowed them to identify 13 other patients with mutations in NMNAT1 as the cause of their disease.

Drs. Falk, Pierce and colleagues also studied how the identified mutations in NMNAT1 affect the function of the NMNAT1 protein, and thus may cause dysfunction and death of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells in the retina. Working together with Eiko Nakamaru-Ogiso, Ph.D., in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at The University of Pennsylvania, they found that mutations in NMNAT1 appear to decrease the ability of the NMNAT1 protein to produce NAD+, a key mediator of cellular signaling and energetics.

Early treatment for patients with NMNAT1-related LCA could be especially beneficial.

Researchers found that all but the youngest patient with NMNAT1 mutations had damage to the macula, the center of the retina that is needed for central vision. "This 4-year-old girl who doesn't have central vision loss yet can possibly benefit substantially if we can devise a therapy for her NMNAT1-mediated LCA that prevents her from developing severe central vision loss," Dr. Pierce said.

Romanian president tries to evade impeachment

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania's unpopular President Traian Basescu may survive an impeachment referendum on Sunday thanks to a requirement that turnout must be more than half for the vote to be valid.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta's leftist government has suspended Basescu and their campaign to unseat the president has brought a stern dressing-down from Brussels over respect for the judiciary and the rule of law.

Ponta's Social Liberal Union (USL) took office in May and is asking Romanians to vote on whether to impeach Basescu for overstepping his powers. He is unpopular for backing austerity and perceptions of cronyism.

Polls show some 65 percent want to remove former sea captain from office, but that the USL will struggle to achieve the required 50 percent plus one turnout after the opposition called for a boycott of the vote.

On Friday, the last day of campaigning, Basescu also asked for a boycott.

He had initially urged Romanians to vote to defeat what he called a coup d'etat, but his stance gradually shifted this week when he and his Democrat Liberal allies said they were concerned about the possibility of electoral fraud.

"I think there will be less than half of voters who turn up, and so Basescu will remain the president," said statistician Vlad Pietreanu.

The government had sought to make it easier to impeach Basescu by removing the minimum turnout rule, but it was forced to back down after harsh EU criticism and to abide by a Constitutional Court ruling on voter numbers.

The bickering has delayed policymaking and raised doubts over Romania's 5 billion euro International Monetary Fund-led aid deal and sent the leu currency plunging to record lows, while borrowing costs have risen.

Romania has made progress since the 1989 overthrow of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and joined the EU in 2007, but the economy slipped back into recession in the first quarter and pockets of severe poverty remain.

Brussels has a wide range of levers to pressure Romania, whose justice system is under EU monitoring. Romania gets European cash to help it catch up with other members and the EU contributes to its IMF-led deal.

Ponta felt the full weight of EU wrath after his government took on the Constitutional Court, threatening to replace judges, reduce its powers and ignoring one of its decisions.

He committed to a series of pledges to the EU that he would respect the rule of law and independence of the judiciary, though Brussels has responded that it still has not yet seen concrete action, for example in naming a neutral public ombudsman rather than a USL loyalist.

If Basescu is impeached, a presidential election will be held within three months. USL co-leader Crin Antonescu would remain interim president until the vote, which could delay a parliamentary election currently expected in November.

Chronic Diseases on the Rise - MHC

Chronic Diseases on the Rise

Chronic Diseases

Chronic diseases are considered non-communicable, last a very long time, are progressive in nature or are permanent. These are the types of diseases that have reached the number one causes of death throughout the world. In fact, chronic diseases account for 63 percent of deaths, which amounted to about 36 million people in 2008.

Which are the main chronic diseases: These include kidney disease, heart disease, obesity-associated diseases, diabetes, allergic diseases, asthma, autoimmune diseases, seizures, and cancer. Among children, 43 percent of US kids have at least one of 20 known chronic diseases and this number increases when you include developmental delays and obesity to 54 percent. One in six kids have some type of developmental disability.

As the population ages, it is of no surprise that the incidence of chronic diseases is increasing. Statistics on asthma show that asthma deaths were stable until the 1960s and then increased after that. In the United Kingdom, asthma?s prevalence has increased 2-3 times what it was in 1955. Hay fever has increased by 260 percent and cases of eczema have increased by 150 percent during the same time period.

Anaphylaxis has markedly increase so that hospital admissions have increased by 700 percent and food allergy admissions have gone up by 500 percent, all in the last 50 years or so. It seems all allergies have been increasing of late.

In some countries, cancer makes up one fourth of all deaths so that cancer deaths could increase by another 50 percent, leading to an extra 15 million new cases of cancer. The causes of these chronic diseases have several potential causes. The first is an increase in environmental chemicals and pollutants. Only around 1 percent of all pollutants have been assessed for their human effects. The rest are complete unknowns.

The diet has increased to include more animal proteins and fats along with more refined carbs. This can cause an increase in heart disease, hypertension and cancerous conditions. Trans fats seem to be mostly related to problems in our diet. The other problem is that, although we are eating less fat, more people are obese than ever so this can?t be the entire problem. Eating less fruits and vegetables has been implicated in cancer and other poor health conditions.

Certainly smoking is a cause of heart disease, emphysema and certain cancers. You have a 24 percent increase in lung cancer if you smoke and a 25 percent increase in heart disease. Children of smokers have a greater incidence of asthma, especially in kids under age 5.

Antibiotic use in the first year of life increases the risk of developing asthma in childhood. Doctors need to prescribe fewer antibiotics, especially in children less than 6 months of age.

Dinofarm Games ? The iPad is The Best Digital Game Console

Right out of the gate, know that I am not a big fan of Apple.? I?m not crazy about their computers, I think everything they sell costs two to three times what it should, I despise their immoral vendor lock-in approach to just about everything they do.? A lot of people probably wouldn?t think so given that my first game, 100 Rogues, was on iOS only.? The reason it was an iOS-only game, as opposed to an Android game, was because back in 2008, Android didn?t really exist, and there seemed to be a lot of demand for new iOS games.? Which ties nicely into my main point here.

I got an iPad 2 a few weeks ago, with two major purposes.? The primary purpose was for playing digital boardgames.? If you weren?t aware, there?s been a wealth of great digital boardgames coming out over the last two years or so.? Puerto Rico, Tigris & Euphrates, Le Havre, Caylus and a ton more (I?ll provide a full list later) have all appeared in digital versions on iOS.? The secondary purpose was for testing our upcoming game, Auro.

I want to make super clear that the games I?m talking about are not the games that most people think of as iOS games.? Shit like Angry Birds, Temple Run, Cut the Rope and Where?s my Water are all bullshit memorization/execution puzzles that are only marginally above ?twiddling one?s thumbs? in terms of their level of interest for an adult mind.

Now, I of course already had an iOS device from my 100 Rogues-testing days:? a 2nd generation iPod Touch.? This device is actually still super solid, doesn?t have anything wrong with it, and should be fully capable of playing digital boardgames (which have the graphical intensity of a website).? Unfortunately, Apple basically screwed me and everyone else who bought that generation, and locked us off from getting some OS updates.? This means that fewer and fewer (now approaching zero) new games that are coming out can even be downloaded on this machine.

Now, I?m sure they have some technical justification for what that is, but I?d be extremely surprised if I found it convincing.? The truth is that they simply said ?okay, it?s time for people whose devices from 2008 still work are FORCED to buy a new device.?? It?s an advanced form of planned obsolescence:? forced obsolescence.? They can basically just shut off updates for any device they want at any time, and then everyone with that category of devices is basically screwed.? Great.

Back to the iPad

I realize that I?m not doing a great job of convincing anyone to buy any Apple products so far.? Here?s the unfortunate truth, though:? if you like games (and by games, I mean contests of ambiguous decisions), there is absolutely no better place to be than the iPad.

I hate touch screens.? They?re OK in a turn-based game that doesn?t force you to click on small individual things (in Auro, you?re only ever asked to click on 6 huge direction-based areas or 7 large circular buttons below), but a tiny screen also puts a huge limitation on what kinds of games are possible.? Any game with cards with text on them is rough, and any kind of ?moving units around a map? type of game is also rough.? The iPad solves these issues by having a big screen.? It still sucks for real-time games, but in terms of turn based games it?s honestly as easy as using a mouse.

In case anyone wanted to accuse me of basically making a ?sunk costs fallacy? ? that I?m saying ?hey everyone, go buy an iPad because I bought one and now I?m forced to think they?re great?, I hope I?ve quelled that fear.? I paid just as much for my 2nd gen iTouch actually (I got my iPad used), and I never really said anything good about it to anyone (in fact, I remember saying that the iTouch is probably the worst product Apple sells, and I still stand by this).

I?m arguing that the iPad is right now sadly the best digital game console in existence (not counting PC).? This is a combination of the other consoles being almost totally horrible, and a quickly increasing number of actually good, actually interesting games on the platform.? So without further adieu?

?

The Games

I haven?t gotten around to playing every good game on the platform yet, as I just got the thing a few weeks ago, but I am getting to it.? Here?s the ones I?ve played and think are fantastic.? Most of them are digital versions of boardgames, but not all.? I want to stress:? none of the below games are dumb puzzles, none are tower defense, none are Farmville clones.

Outwitters

Outwitters ? I think this is the best original digital game ever made.? It?s not based on a boardgame, but its game design is so good you might think it was.? It?s a turn-based tactical wargame, a genre that I know very well, and I can say it?s the best one I?ve ever played.? It?s extremely elegant, hex-based, super-visually clear, with a great online matchmaking system.? It?s just fantastic, and best of all, it?s free to play.? There?s extra content that you totally don?t need and won?t make you more powerful.

Le Havre ? Designed by Uwe Rosenberg, slightly better known for Agricola, which is currently Boardgamegeek?s #2 game.? I?ve been playing Agricola for awhile, and while I enjoy it, I think it has some serious problems.? The two biggest problems are the ?drawing fourteen cards at the start of the game with tons of unique text on each of them?, and the multi-player solitaire thing, where you?re not really interacting with each other much.? Le Havre, in my view, solves these two problems.? A great thing about it is that there are common buildings, and when you buy a building, other players can use that building that you now own and pay you to use it.? This creates a really cool little economics game between the players.? It?s still extremely complicated and far from elegant, but it makes for a great game to play against bots.

Reiner Knizia?s Tigris & Euphrates ? A very interesting tile-laying game with some awesome dynamic mergers of cities that is reminiscent of group mergers late game in Go.? Unfortunately the game is limited by a really severly important tile-drawing mechanism (if you don?t get enough red tiles, you?re at a major disadvantage and other players can push you around).? Also, it doesn?t make for a great online game, but it?s fun versus bots.

Reiner Knizia?s Samurai ? Another tile-laying game from Knizia.? I think this one is smoother, but probably a little bit less interesting.? Makes for a great introduction-to-real-boardgames game, and is much better to play online than T&E.? (Sadly, the best of Knizia?s tile-laying trilogy, Through the Desert, did not make for a wonderful app, so I?m not recommending it, although it does exist).

Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion ? Fans of Final Fantasy Tactics need to jump all over this one.? It?s got a very interesting Rock-Paper-Scissors mechanism (a bit like Fire Emblem but without the randomness), and a great production.? The only problem is it?s campaign based and there?s not any kind of endless/randomized mode.? This makes it a lot more ?videogamey? than the other games on my list.

Zaga-33 ? This is a solid, boiled-down roguelike.? You can play it free on PC, I recommend you check it out.

Rune Raiders ? Haven?t played another game like this.? You?re moving upwards on a long shaft of tiles with a party of D&D-role-ish units that are in formation.? Feels puzzley, but it has a randomized mode that?s score based.? Very cool, although undercut by some annoying metagame and there?s probably too much content.

Tilt To Live ? Another game from the creators of Outwitters.? It?s a tilting game.? You would be forgiven for being completely in doubt about the possibility of this game being any good, but the fact it it is good.? Really good.? A super simple game that might look a bit like Geometry Wars but is actually a million times more elegant, interesting and difficult.

Knizia?s Labyrinth ? A really unassuming little solitaire game that on first glance seems like it might be dull and flat.? Actually, it?s challenging and unique.? You have to lay tiles, randomly drawn, in such a way as to get to the other side of a map, while getting as much treasure as possible.? It?s difficult and your greed will be your undoing!? I recommend the free version, as the content added from getting the full version only make the game more luck-based (this also exists on Android).

Wabash Cannonball ? This is a re-implementation of the great train-based boardgame Chicago Express.? Out of all the serious train-games I?ve played, this is by far the most elegant.? Extremely knife-fightey and strategic, and this is one of the few cases where the digital version is just really superior to the actual boardgame.? The reason is that the boardgame is a bit ?math?ey, like you have to calculate things frequently, and the digital game does a lot of that for you.? Very good AI, too!

Wabash Cannonball

SmartGo ? Like I said, KGS Go doesn?t exist on iOS.? While that is unfortunate, SmartGo is a great way to learn to play.? It has a long, in-depth tutorial mode, lots of go problems, and a great AI matchmaking system.

Knizia?s Medici ? Medici is about as simple of a bidding game as you could get, but it?s great for what it is.? It takes less than five minutes to play a full game, and yet it?s interesting and difficult.? No online multiplayer, but the AI is pretty good.

Catan ? I?m not crazy about The Settlers of Catan, but I know other people are.? And I?ll still play it from time to time, when I?m in the mood to be robbed by dice-rolls (which isn?t often).

Battle at Gundabad ? I mentioned that I play a lot of Androminion.? Well, before that, I played tons of Battle at Gundabad, which is a Dominion re-skin.? Great implementation of a game that, while I think it?s a little weak, certainly has its appeal.

Bohnanza ? Actually, I recommend everyone get the boardgame version of this.? It?s cheap, and an awesome social party-game that isn?t bullshit.? There is an iOS version of it that?s pretty good, but unfortunately a lot of the fun of the game ? negotiation ? isn?t there against the bots, and there?s no multiplayer.

Neuroshima Hex ? a very original tile-laying game with a very original gameplay mechanism.? Place pieces facing each other, and eventually all attacks happen at once.? Limited by a tile-drawing system and shamefully crappy multiplayer, but I still recommend it.

Drop7 ? A pretty neat Tetris/Sudoku-ish piece-dropping game.? Original rules, which I appreciate.? Somehow, I haven?t found the game terribly compelling, although it?s definitely solid and original, and worth playing.

Reiner Knizia?s Money ? Did I mention I like Reiner Knizia?? This is a bidding game that?s like one notch more complex than Medici, and also one notch better.? You?re collecting sets of money denominations to try to gain the highest score by the end of the game, but you also have to use that same money to bid with during the game.? Good multiplayer was just added, so check it out!

Blokus ? A different kind of abstract strategy game, where you?re trying to fit as many things that look like Tetris tetronimoes onto the board before the game ends.? Very difficult and thought-provoking;? much deeper than you might think on first play.

Blokus

?

It?s Alive ? This is such a good example of the iOS platform being the best place to play games.? This is a somewhat mediocre boardgame, and even a somewhat mediocre implementation, and yet it?s more interesting than 99.9% of videogames that you can find on XBox, Wii or PS3.? Has a cool bidding system where you can buy things outright for full, start a bid on them to try to get them for cheap, or sell them for half-price.? Just enough complexity to keep it surprising.

Small World ? A very cool war-game with lots of fun races and fun powers.? Limited by a very obvious ?game design band-aid? dice roll and not only no online multiplayer at all, but for some reason you can only play 2 players against the bot, which is particularly strange because I think Small World is far better with 3 or 4 players.

Hive ? One of the most unique abstract games I?ve played.? There?s no board;? you?re dynamically creating the board through adding linked tiles together.? A neat insect theme which supports the gameplay actions really well.? Decent implementation, for some reason there?s 3D graphics though which is only a bad thing.

100 Rogues ? Of course, I can?t be trusted, being the guy who designed this game.? However, this was my first experience playing the game on iPad, and it is so much better.? Everything is better on iPad, but 100 Rogues really needs it, particularly for those moments where you?re trying to click on a specific tile that you want to throw a rock at, or something.

?

Here?s even more games that I plan on checking out, but haven?t yet:

Puerto Rico ? It?s freaking Puerto Rico.? It?s like the best game ever made.? I have not had a chance to try this iOS version, largely because I play enough digital PR with the free Java version, Tropic Euro on my computer.

Caylus ? A Eurogame that everyone seems to love that has no randomness.? I haven?t played it yet but I?m pretty sure within the next month or two I?ll be saying it?s one of my favorite games ever.

Tikal ? Don?t know much about this except that it?s a beloved boardgame.? That?s enough of a reason to check it out!

BattleCon ? Looks like a significantly less-random Yomi-ish game.? There?s no card drawing, although there is still simultaneous actions (which aren?t random exactly, but are guessing).

Ticket to Ride ? There are two versions of this on iOS actually, and I?m hearing conflicting stuff about which version I should check out.? However, I own the actual game and have played tons of games of it online (at Daysofwonder.com), so I know what to expect, and I?ll be picking it up eventually.? It?s a random, but elegant family game that has a little bit more stabbyness than you might expect.

McGuire ? A clone of Acquire, which everyone says is amazing and looks super elegant.

Ra, BattleLine, Skyline, Deck Buster, Keltis Oracle ? More Reiner Knizia games, so of course I?m going to check them out.

Tichu, Haggis ? These are both partnership trick-taking card game that look a little bit like a slightly more elegant Contract Bridge.? Excited to learn them.

?

And finally, some games that I don?t like, but I expect a lot of other people will like:

Magic 2013 ? It?s Magic: The Gathering.? A lot of people like it.? I?m not one of them (I?ve written before about why CCGs are horribly doomed).? Seems like a decent implementation, but it does have these annoying unskippable timers.

Summoner Wars ? I think this game is basically awful, but I wish I had found it when I was in high school, because I probably would have loved it back then.? It?s basically M:TG but with a grid, and slightly less collectible.? I?ll write a full review of this game later on, because I really think it?s bad.? The application is fantastic, though.

Knizia?s Ingenious ? The one Knizia game I?ve ever played that I didn?t love.? I don?t know what it is about this game;? it just doesn?t grab me for whatever reason.? Certainly not a bad game.

Hero Academy ? This is also not a boardgame, but seems inspired by some of them.? I personally think that Outwitters has made this game obsolete, but I know many will disagree with me, so I?ve put it here.? A neat tactical wargame.

?

Get an iPad

Okay, so that?s enough for now, but I seriously could go on, for a long time too.?? Whoops, I forgot Knizia?s Kingdoms.? Oh and Zooloretto.? Oh and Knizia?s Keltis Oracle.? Plus there are another 5 or 10 I haven?t even tried yet, like Food Fight.? I?m sure many who read this can list another 20 that I?ve completely missed.

So with that, I have to recommend that you go get an iPad.? It?s the best place to play games right now.? I don?t think I?ve told another human being to buy a gaming machine (besides PC which is obviously the very best place to play games ever, ever) since the 1990s, so it feels weird to say it.? But go pay Apple corporation nearly twice what you should on a tablet.

I should mention that I have an Android phone, and it?s sadly nowhere near iOS in terms of how many great games are on it.? I?ll go over a few.? There are literally only two games that I?ve found that are great and only available on Android (not on iOS).? Those are:

KGS Go ? This costs $15, which is a lot of money, but honestly if you like Go, it?s worth it.? Instant match-making on KGS, the world?s best online go service, is something you really can?t put a price on.

Androminion ? Dominion is a dumb, but extremely fun game.? I?ve played probably 1,000 games of this on my Droid, despite myself.? Androminion is free, and has all of the expansions.

Other than that, there?s only about a half-dozen other games that are worth owning, all of which are available on iOS as well:? stuff like Blokish, Catan, Knizia?s Labyrinth and a few others.

So!? In conclusion:? if you like games (and by that I mean, contests of ambiguous decisions), go get an iPad.? Things are only getting started now ? I think we?re entering a whole new era of difficult, interesting, and thought-provoking games.
