Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson: Stepping Out, Still in Love

It was date night for The Bachelor's Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson last night.

The two stepped out in L.A. at Svedka's 2nd Annual Night of a Billion Reality Stars bash with fellow reality fixtures such as Jon Gosselin, Kyle Richards, Ali Fedotowsky, Teresa Giudice, Gretchen Rossi. Like a C-list Who's Who right there.

Clearly, after everything that's gone down, Ben and Courtney were the center of attention. They said that's starting to fade as they settle into normal life, however, and they really couldn't be happier for their 15 minutes to fade away.

Ben Flajnik Topless PicCourt Robertson

"It's getting close," Flajnik said of returning to normalcy after the past year. "Now that the show's over and the star's fading ... [it's] wonderful for us."

"We're getting there," Courtney Robertson added.

Although the couple have an army of skeptics, they say they've learned "lots" about each other since the end of the Bachelor's filming and its aftermath.

"The thing people don't know is that when the show was airing we spent a lot of time together, and we were off almost every weekend," Ben explained.

"We got to know each other really well."

As for wedding plans? "No date set," Robertson admitted. "We're engaged, dating, taking it slow. We love each other very much. It took the pressure off. "

Mused Flajnik: "We kind of looked back at some of the other Bachelor relationships that didn't work out and the reason for that is you have so much pressure."

"Pressure to move in together and set a date and all this kind of stuff ... Let's figure out who we are together before we do any of that and take the pressure off."

If they do tie the knot, it would be in "Arizona or California somewhere," he said.

Will it ever get to that point? Vote below:

Mia Wasikowska Is Madame Bovary

What has long set Gustave Flaubert?s ?Madame Bovary? apart from other literary works is that it is wildly considered by scholars and other writers alike to be a ?perfect? work of fiction and a supreme example of Realism, one elevated by Flaubert?s personal signature of weaving in themes and details and paying particular attention to setting and place. It?s not a very original story ? in short terms, it tracks the unhappy marriage of a mismatched pair that ends tragically after the wife?s unfaithfulness, partially sparked by her boredom ? but Flaubert?s skill makes the reading of the book its own reward.

Of course, the novel has been adapted for the screen numerous times ? including Albert Ray?s 1932 film, MGM?s 1949 film directed by Vincente Minnelli, a 2000 miniseries starring Frances O?Connor, and Claude Chabrol?s 1991 Isabelle Huppert-starring feature. And, of course, it?s high time that Hollywood adapted the novel yet again ? its importance as a written work be damned!

Variety reports that Mia Wasikowska will star in a new Madame Bovary as Emma Bovary herself. Wasikowska has become Hollywood?s go-to girl for period pieces, with recent roles in Jane Eyre and Albert Nobbs, so such casting is not surprising. Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls) will direct from a screenplay by Rose Barrenche. The outlet reports that ?the adaptation is a period piece that is faithful to Gustave Flaubert?s original story, [but] it is a fresh retelling of the classic novel, em[emphasizing the more youthful and contemporary themes.? What, like having illicit sex and being unsatisfied in life? So like, a hipster adaptation?

Paul Giamatti is reportedly ?also circling a key role,? which could likely be the sly and conniving Monsieur Lheureux. The role would reunite Giamatti with Barthes, who directed him in her Cold Souls.

Even with talent on board like Wasikowska and Giamatti, I am unable to stir up even a smidgen of excitement for this project. What about you?

Real Estate Investing: How To Make Money In A Down Market

One of the most stimulating things about real estate investing is understanding what markets will produce the best long term returns ? particularly while in the middle of a challenging real estate market.

In a down market, savvy investors in real estate are enthusiastic to discover how they can best leverage their resources. And expert forecasts are some of the finest tools they can utilize to back up their methods. An excellent example comes from property consulting firm John Burns Real Estate (JBRE), that has?forecast that home-ownership will fall from 70.0% to 62.1% by 2015 thanks to a soft?economy, low consumer confidence, limited mortgage availability, increased rates of foreclosures and short sales, among other?things.

John Burns Real Estate predicted, although based primarily on broad market conditions, points out that we're going to see a rising number of renters and so a larger demand and need for rental housing.

Savvy investors in real estate select investment properties that are located in markets with the best long-term growth potential. This enables them to invest intelligently?today while hedging their bets on the future expansion and appreciation of their target markets.

Our 2012 Housing Market Forecast lists the Top 100 Metropolitan Markets based?on future job growth and projected price appreciation. If you're interested in finding growth markets with robust appreciation potential, then the McAllen-Edinburgh-Mission, Texas metropolitan area could be your primary choice. We project its 10-year future job expansion to jump by 32.3% and home values to appreciate by 37.9% in 5 years. Additionally, property values remain comparatively affordable with the median sales price around $100,000.

Apart from this Texas metropolitan?investment area, our report uncovers other real estate markets with great potential including 2 from Colorado (Colorado Springs and Denver-Aurora) along with California (Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville, and Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura). Other markets that made the Top 10 include North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, FL; Las-Vegas-Paradise, NV; Hartford, CT; Springfield, MA; and Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, AZ. These areas have a five-year appreciation outlook well above 21%. (You can download the full report here.)

And what does this mean for property investors? There's a gold-mine out there waiting for you to take advantage of! A fall in home-ownership means a rise in rental units to deal with the surge in demand from people who have recently lost their homes to foreclosure, people who can't afford to purchase property, and people who are still saving up for a new home. Last October 2011, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) announced that the amount of rental houses had gone up to 38 million units in 2Q11 and the vacancy rate of single-family houses and multi -family units was at a record low rate of 9.2%.

Investors never think twice about snapping up bargain properties with positive cash flow. As NAR chief economist, Lawrence Yun, puts it, "The dynamics of falling rental vacancy rates mean increased owner pricing power. Naturally as a consequence rents have been pushed higher... Rising rents mean an improved rate of return for property investors."

Cash flow investment properties are indeed your best hedge against the negative impacts of a down market. Take it from Morgan Stanley's "Housing 2.0 The New Rental Paradigm" report. The financial services company observes that gross rents are "historically attractive relative to current distressed prices. Adding to this attractiveness is the fact that multi-family data shows rents continuing to rise." Therefore it favors single-family houses as the most ideal type of property investment in today's market due to their large rental potential.

JBRE's outlook also reveals that home-ownership won't be on an upturn until 2025 at 67.1% on the back of foreclosed homes returning to ownership, improved market conditions and regular mortgage credit, and a rise in the tendency of households to own a house. That can signal the time to think about selling your portfolio and taking a decent profit, or trading up into more real estate utilizing the IRS 1031 tax deferred exchange.

There are many real estate investing opportunities out there today. Be certain to take action, do your homework and invest intelligently. As John Burns?puts it, "The American dream of home-ownership is still alive and well."

Rihanna Not Dating Ashton Kutcher

'I'm happy and I'm single,' singer tells reporters at a press conference in London.

Rihanna had been romantically linked to Ashton Kutcher last week, when a report surfaced that she had headed over to the actor's house late one night and stayed there for several hours.

At a London press conference for "Battleship," a reporter used her one question with the pop star to ask about the alleged rendezvous. After meandering around about Ri's fans and their love for her, she eventually got to her point: Would she get any visits from Kutcher while out promoting the film?

The singer's response? Well, she wasn't amused. "Wow, how disappointing was that question," she said in a video posted on the website. "I'm happy and I'm single, if that's what you're really asking."

While in London, the singer took some time to visit her pal Drake, who was in town performing at the O2 arena earlier this week. The singer was spotted riding the Tube to the show on Tuesday night. Wearing her hair blond and shaggy, she was decked out in thigh-high boots, a leather jacket and a flame-embossed T-shirt over barely there denim shorts. The only way she disguised herself was with a pair of sunglasses.

"There's so much traffic. It's approximately an hour and a half to the O2 every time. ... I hate waking up early and I'm always late, so the tube is like 10 minutes," she told interviewer Jonathan Ross recently about her love for public transportation. Post-show she and Drake headed to Low nightclub to hang out with pals.

Ri is currently out promoting the May release of "Battleship," but she recently shot a trio of music videos. Fans should keep a lookout for her clip with Drake for "Take Care," as well as videos for her collabo with Coldplay on "Princess of China" and her own video for "Where Have You Been."

Fewer than half Arab leaders attend Iraq summit

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Fewer than half the leaders of the Arab world showed up at an Arab summit in Baghdad on Thursday, a snub to the Iraqi government, but the leaders agreed on an appeal to Syria's regime to stop its bloody crackdown on opponents..

As the summit opened in a former palace of ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, the powerful Sunni monarchs of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, other Gulf nations and Jordan and Morocco were absent.

The only ruler from the Gulf to attend was the emir of Kuwait, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, whose attendance was significant because Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 and occupied it for nearly seven months before a U.S.-led coalition drove his army out. Relations between the two neighbors have been fraught with tension since and even after Saddam's 2003 ouster. Sheik Al Sabah's attendance should cap recent improvement in relations.

The one-day summit ended with a call on Syria's embattled regime to "immediately implement" proposals put forward by joint U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to end the deadly year-long conflict. The summit's final communique said that the Arab leaders fully support the "legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people to democracy and freedom and their right to determine their future."

The plan calls for Damascus to immediately stop troop movements and use of heavy weapons in populated areas and to commit to a daily two-hour halt in fighting to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations. It includes a full cease-fire to be supervised by the U.N. so that all parties can discuss a political solution.

In his first comments on Annan's plan, Assad says Syria will "spare no effort" to ensure the mission's success, according to the state news agency. Assad said Annan must also get a commitment from armed groups to cease their "terrorist acts" against his government.

Speaking at the post-summit news conference, Arab league chief Nabil Elaraby suggested that the Annan plan was Assad's last chance for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, which the U.N. says has killed at least 9,000 people.

"Assad was given more than one chance. The issue is now with the United Nations and the Security Council," said Elaraby. "The ball is now in Syria's court. It will have to act positively."

One reason for the absences was the Gulf leaders' deep distrust of Iraq's Shiite-dominated government, which they believe is a proxy for Iran. In unusually direct remarks, Qatar's prime minister said the lower representation was to protest what he called the Baghdad government's marginalization of Iraq's Sunni Muslim minority.

Another reason was the bitterness surrounding the main issue hanging over the summit ? the conflict in Syria ? on which Iraq has taken an ambivalent stand.

Iraq's foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari, remained upbeat. He told a news conference at the end of the summit: "We are very comfortable with the level of representation considering the present conditions (in Iraq). The most important thing is that all Arab states participated. It was a historic summit."

He , however, reacted angrily when asked about the representation of Saudi Arabia and Qatar by their ambassadors to the Arab League in its Cairo headquarters.

"We are not concerned, we are not bothered as long as they came."

Arab leaders in the Gulf want tough action to stop the Syrian regime's bloody crackdown on the opposition, with their eye on ultimately bringing down President Basher Assad. If Assad goes, they hope, they can break Sunni-majority Syria out of its alliance with Iran. However, Iraq, which also has close ties to Iran, has resisted any strong measures by the Arab League on Syria, with Zebari saying he was opposed to foreign intervention there.

The summit is the first held by the 22-member League since the Arab Spring revolts began sweeping through the region more than a year ago. The turmoil forced the cancellation of last year's summit. Since then, four perennials of the summit have been swept from the scene ? Egypt's Hosni Mubarak, Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh, Tunisia's Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Libya's Moammar Gadhafi.

The new leaders of Tunisia and Libya were among the 10 heads of state who attended, but Egypt and Yemen sent lower-level figures, a reflection of the domestic turmoil still roiling those nations.

The summit will also be remembered for an extraordinary precedent. Iraqi President Jalal Talabani became the first non-Arab to chair an Arab League summit. Talabani, a Kurd who speaks fluent Arabic and is well versed in Arab culture, has been a father figure to Iraqis since the ouster of Saddam Hussein in 2003, often acting as a unifier between the nation's rival ethnic and religious factions.

Another Iraqi Kurd, Foreign Minister Zebari, chaired Wednesday's foreign ministers' meeting.

Iraq had hoped that hosting the summit ? its first Arab summit since 1990 ? would herald its return to the Arab fold after two decades of isolation. But the absences and the ability of militants to launch attacks despite a massive security operation ? a mortar hit an area not far from the summit's venue as the meeting started ? suggest that Iraq may still have some way to go before it could fully return to normalcy and reintegrate into the Arab world.

Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al Thani, also the country's foreign minister, told Al-Jazeera late Wednesday that his own nation's low level of representation was a "message" to Iraq's majority Shiites to stop what he called the marginalization of minority Sunnis.

Majority Shiites have dominated Iraq since the 2003 ouster of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni. The nation's once powerful Sunnis complain that the Shiite-led government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is concentrating power in the hands of the Shiites. There is a growing desire by Sunni-majority provinces to win autonomy as a way to escape Shiite domination.

Tens of thousands of Iraqis died in the sectarian violence that began shortly after Saddam's ouster but peaked in 2006 and 2007. Tension continues to simmers to this day, with occasional attacks by Sunni militants against Shiites and crackdowns on Sunni areas by the Shiite-led security forces.

"Qatar wants the Iraqi government to resolve this in a way that unites the Iraqi people and gives everyone their rights through a dialogue involving all parties," said the Qatari prime minister.

Relations between Iraq and the Gulf Arab nations have also been tense over criticism by Shiite Iraqi politicians and clerics of Bahrain's crackdown on Shiite protesters the past year. The demonstrators seek more economic opportunity and an end to what they see as discrimination by the Sunni ruling family.

Al-Maliki on Wednesday met with Bahrain's foreign minister on the sidelines of the summit. Foreign Minister Zebari later told reporters that Bahrain would not be on the summit's agenda, a decision that appeared to be a concession by the hosts.

The flood of condemnations and denouncements of the Syrian regime in the opening session of the summit could only reinforce their view that it may be too late for diplomacy to bear fruit in Syria.

The Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have been pushing behind the scenes for more assertive action to end the conflict. Privately, they see little benefit in the Arab League's efforts to reach a peaceful settlement and prefer instead to see a small core of nations banding together to act on their own.

Among the options they are considering are arming the Syrian rebels and creating a safe haven for the opposition along the Turkish-Syrian border to serve as a humanitarian refuge or staging ground for anti-regime forces. Such a step would require help from Turkey ? the country best positioned to defend such a safe haven ? but so far Ankara has seemed reluctant.

California bill would punish student-teacher romances

By msnbc.com staff

Debbie Noda / Zuma Press

Enochs High School student Jordan Powers, 18, and James Hooker, 41, a teacher who resigned from the school talk about their relationship on Feb. 28.

A California lawmaker wants to make it a crime for a teacher to have a romance with a student, even the pupil is over 18.

Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen, a Republican from Modesto,?introduced on Tuesday Assembly Bill 1861, which would make it a felony for a teacher to have an inappropriate relationship with a student. Additionally, the bill seeks to strip teachers of their pensions, if?convicted of a work-related felony.

The bill is a response to the case of Modesto high school teacher James Hooker, 41, who resigned from his teaching position in February over his?relationship with student Jordan Powers,?now 18.

Hooker and Powers have defended their relationship, appearing on?national talk shows to claim?their romance did not turn sexual until Powers was of age. Hooker met Powers during her freshman year at Enochs High School. They now live together.

"It is an outrage that a high school teacher would engage in a romantic relationship with a student," said Olsen in a statement. "We need to do everything we can to deter this behavior, and to ensure schools are a safe and secure learning environment for our children."

The bill follows the lead of 23 other states by making it a felony for such relationships, according to Olsen's office.

Attempts?by msnbc.com to contact Olsen for comment?were unsuccessful on Tuesday.?

Currently in California, a teacher can only be charged with a felony for engaging in a relationship with a student who is under 18 years old. Bill 1861 applies to elementary, middle, and secondary schools.

The student's mother, Tammie Powers,?said she supported the bill and wanted to see similar legislation passed in every state. She appeared with Olsen in Sacramento during a press conference?to announce the bill.?

"As parents, we send our children to school with the expectation that they're going to be safe, they're going to receive a good education,"?Powers told The Sacramento Bee. "Not that they're going to be pursued."

The bill would not affect her daughter?s case, she said, which is still under investigation by the Modesto police.

Samsung SCX-3405FW

If you need a mono laser MFP for light-duty printing in a micro office or as a personal printer in any size office, the Samsung SCX-3405FW ($200 street) should grab your attention. Small enough to share a desk with, it offers wired and WiFi network support; the ability to scan, work as a standalone copier and fax machine; and the ability to fax from your PC even over a network. It even includes a 40-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to complement the letter-size flatbed and let you scan legal-size pages. Add in the reasonably high-quality output and acceptable, if not impressive, speed, and it's certainly worth a look.

The SCX-3405FW is one of the few mono laser MFPs that's small enough to serve comfortably as a personal printer. In fact, it's one of the smallest. Measuring 11.7 by 15.8 by 11.5 inches (HWD), it's smaller than the Editors' Choice Panasonic KX-MB2000 ($130 street, 4 stars) for example, and roughly the same size as the HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw MFP ($259.99 direct, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed.

The practical cost of the printer?s very small size is that it has little room for paper handling features. If you plan to share it on a network, the 150-sheet tray?with no manual feed and no automatic duplexing?will limit it to light-duty printing even by micro office standards. However, the paper handling is adequate for most personal use where the small size is more important, since you'll likely want to keep it on, or next to, your desk.

Setup and Speed
Setting up the SCX-3405FW was standard fare. For my tests, I connected it to a network using the Ethernet port and ran the tests from a Windows Vista system.

Samsung SCX-3405FW

Samsung rates the printer at 21 pages per minute (ppm), which means you should see close to that speed when you print text files with no graphics or photos. On our business applications suite, I timed it (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 7.7 ppm, fast enough so the speed shouldn't be an issue, but far from impressive. It's essentially tied with the less expensive KX-MB2000, at 8 ppm and significantly slower than the more expensive M1217nfw, at 11.1 ppm.

Output Quality and Other issues
Output quality for the SCX-3405FW is a bit of a mixed bag, but its strongest scores are for text and graphics, which are generally the more important types of output for mono printers. Both are at the top of the tight range where the vast majority of mono laser MFPs fall. Photo quality is at rock bottom of the full range for the category.

The text is easily good enough for any typical business document, even if you need small font sizes, although you may have to pick the font style carefully if you need 4 or 5 point size. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you might even consider it good enough for desktop publishing. Graphics quality is similarly good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts and the like.

Photo quality is good enough to print, say, Web pages with recognizable photos, which makes it good enough for internal business use. However, there's an obvious loss of shading across the entire range from white to black, so light areas, like a sky with clouds, turned solid white in my tests, and dark areas turned a solid black. I wouldn't even consider using the printer for something like a client newsletter with photos.

As long as you don't need better-quality photos?and odds are you don't if you're shopping for a mono laser MFP?the Samsung SCX-3405FW has a lot to recommend it. It offers all the MFP features you're likely to need in a personal printer?scanning, faxing, and copying. And note that Samsung offers free apps that that let the printer both print from and scan to Android, iOS, and Windows 7 devices over a Wi-Fi access point, with plans to allow direct Wi-Fi connection with a firmware upgrade later this year. Most of all, it's small enough to be a good physical fit as a personal printer, as well as a good fit for what it can do.

Complexities of Communication at Workplace | Womenz Magazine

Complex of Communication at WorkplaceCommunication is the means to develop a strong business relation at workplace. Great attention is given towards the business-customer relation. Equally important is to develop a healthy relation among the workers at workplace. If the communication is not direct, appropriate and compromising then great complexities arise in the workplace relations.

Despite the size of the firm, the managerial head at workplace has a great duty to developing firm relation at workplace for a better communication. This inculcates various appeals of the junior staff to their seniors in an appropriate manner.

It has been observed that lack of communication leads to the inadequacy of the workplace and workers? relation. Many opportunities are available of the poor communication at the workplace and one should be very well aware of these hindrances. It is the first step of solving your complex problems at a workplace.

It is a common idea that employers are the ones to develop this poor communication at workplace. In fact they are usually the last ones to get to know about the lack of communication despite their efforts to keep a balanced check,

What goes wrong at the workplace is the lacking information regarding the instructions to be given for each task. Regardless of the external sources from where the data is retrieved, the co-workers at your workplace need to share their due information for the better accomplishment of each task.

Complex problems arise at workplace where some workers believe that they did share their part of the important information where the fact still remains that some people are better off at communicating with others than the rest.? Thus, the way of communication at workplace also matters a lot. Thus, the poor communication in this case causes greater troubles when responsibilities are shared and still people are unable to complete their tasks due to the inability to share the information in the right way.

The best way to communicate at a workplace is to use simple vocabulary, convincing tone and at ease with the other co-workers. You need to get to the point quickly so that the listener doesn?t lose interest while you haven?t gotten to the important bit of information. Use the most easiest and understandable language to avoid confusions in communication.

MADRID (AP) ? A Euro Vegas in down-and-out Spain?

Depending on whom you ask, it could be heaven-sent or a deal with the devil.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson's dream to build Europe's first Las Vegas-style resort in Spain would certainly bring much needed relief to an economy lurching into another recession and struggling with sky-high unemployment.

But the millions that would rain down come with strings attached: Adelson wants Spanish laws bent so that gamblers can smoke inside the casinos and new zoning regulations allowing him to send buildings soaring above the skyline. And not everyone is thrilled about the idea of Spain hosting a European Sin City that could attract prostitution and mafia gangs ? and add gambling addiction to the woes of already desperate Spaniards.

Still, Madrid and Barcelona are both vying to woo Adelson and the $22 billion he wants to invest to erect "Eurovegas" ? an array of six casinos, 12 hotels featuring 36,000 rooms, a convention center, three golf courses, shopping centers, bars and restaurants.

The two sites being eyed in Madrid each cover an area equivalent to 1,000 football fields.

Adelson and his company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., will decide by the summer which city to build in if they reach a deal with Spanish authorities.

To say that Spain needs his money would be an understatement.

The country's jobless rate is around 23 percent ? nearly 50 percent among those under age 25 ? and the economy is forecast to shrink by 1.7 percent this year. First-quarter GDP numbers are expected to show Spain has slipped into its second recession in three years.

"At a time like this, with so little to boost the economy, something like this is like manna falling from heaven," said Gayle Allard, an economist who specializes in labor market issues at IE Business School in Madrid.

Allard said that Spain is already a huge tourist draw, with its sunshine and great beaches, and a casino complex would build on those assets. Spain is regularly one of the world's three most visited countries, along with the United States and France.

Critics argue Eurovegas will bring more criminality to Spain just as the economy goes into a nose-dive. And they warn that while Spain's young people are in dire need of jobs, positions such as hotel maids, waiters and croupiers are not a recipe for success.

Fears abound that allowing Adelson to build skyward would create a massive eyesore for either picturesque city that gets the casino. The notion of easing Spain's smoking ban so gamblers can light up while trying their luck also horrifies anti-tobacco campaigners.

Adelson started looking at Spain as a possible site for a European gambling magnet in 2007, but years of negotiations with Socialists who ruled then went nowhere.

The Socialists lost power last year as voters vented frustration over the dismal economy. Now the more business-friendly Popular Party is in charge, and this, along with the downturn, means authorities are probably more amenable to welcoming Adelson.

Gambling is legal in Spain. But its casinos, and others in Europe, are associated with a more snooty clientele and ambiance, not the festive, anything-goes atmosphere of Vegas.

"There is no one place in Europe that is fun to go to and play the slots or play tables or have a good time with an adult couple or family," Adelson said in a meeting with investors in New York last September. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

The hotels and casinos and all the rest would be built in three phases over the course of 10 years. Adelson says the project would create 260,000 jobs, 190,000 of them directly.

"It is a very ambitious project," said Jesus Sainz, president of PromoMadrid, a company which is owned by the Madrid regional government and has been negotiating with Adelson's people.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. surpassed Caesars Entertainment Corp. last year as the world's largest gaming corporation, posting profits of $1.27 billion in 2011. Sands operates properties in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore.

Gaming investors have sniffed out Spain before. A few years ago, Harrah's Entertainment Inc. ? now known as Caesars ? explored the idea of building a casino complex, albeit smaller than the one being considered now, in Ciudad Real, 200 kilometers (130 miles) south of Madrid. But nothing came of it.

What's changed things now is Spain's economic crisis.

The Popular Party seems open to the Eurovegas idea, although Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's office declined to comment for this story. Allard, of the business school, said that "if the project is viable, the government is going to collaborate and is going to play ball."

Allard said Spain lures lots of free-spending Russian, Chinese and Arab tourists and would be a perfect draw for travelers with a taste for blackjack or roulette.

Madrid was first in expressing interest years ago, with Barcelona jumping in more recently when the regional government changed hands from Socialist to center-right, pro-business Catalan nationalists. The Barcelona site is a wetlands area far from the city center but with a view of the Mediterranean.

In Madrid, one site is a deserted expanse near a shanty town and the other is next to a middle-class suburb called Alcorcon. People there are torn between the lure of jobs and the prospect of prostitutes flooding in.

"Ten years from now, my daughter will be 24 and I would not like her to live in a city with this kind of business," said Pilar Torres, a 44-year-old Alcorcon resident who is unemployed.

An anti-Eurovegas association held a rally in Madrid last week in which Adelson was mocked as an economic messiah, his pockets overflowing with dollars.

Juan Garcia, a spokesman for the association, said a gambling haven is no answer to Spain's crisis.

"I think a casino would be a waste of brain power and labor, and instead endorses an activity that has little do with research, innovation and development," Garcia said.
