Kim Young-Shik poses in front of his print shop in Seoul on Dec. 26, 2011.

He's been cursed in the street, appeared in a movie and perfected the wave of North Korea's "Dear Leader". Now Kim Jong Il's leading look-alike feels that part of himself died along with the late ruler, Agence France Presse (AFP)?reports.

South Korean shopkeeper Kim Young-Shik has been impersonating Kim Jong Il for over 15 years, making appearances in advertisements?and at?birthday parties and even?singing at weddings.?

NBC News' Ian Williams visited the pot-bellied pseudo dictator at his shop in Seoul just over a year ago, when the signs were already looking ominous for his acting career. Now, he wistfully admits that it may be?time to hang up his dark glasses, and for a younger man to step forward to play the role of the new "Great Leader", Kim Jong Un.

"I feel very empty," he told AFP. "I'd like to do more acting as Kim Jong Il, but they'll find someone new for Jong Un. They asked if my son looked like him but he doesn't or I would have sent him to an audition,'' he said.

Santorum: The GOP's past or future? (Politico)

IOWA CITY ? In Iowa this week, Rick Santorum looks for the first time like he?s in the right place at the right moment in the presidential campaign.

But to listen to the candidate speak, you might think that place is the floor of the United States Senate, and the moment is 1998.

Santorum goes after Ron Paul

There is growing evidence, both from polls and anecdotally, that while Santorum may not have fully caught fire in Iowa, the once-cold embers of his campaign are hot and starting to glow. With Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann drifting toward irrelevance, Newt Gingrich?s poll numbers plummeting and Herman Cain off the stage entirely, the state?s conservative and evangelical faithful may be giving Santorum a long and serious look. Santorum, after all, has campaigned the Iowa way ? traveling the state relentlessly, taking questions for hours, hunting caucus support voter by voter.

Yet even as Santorum enjoys the moment of national attention he?s labored for months to earn, the former Pennsylvania senator hasn?t put to rest the central challenge of his campaign: showing voters that he?s the best fit for the moment that is 2012, rather than a political holdover who?s been out of office for half a decade and whose political touchstones are ancient history to many voters.

For Iowans inclined to view Santorum with skepticism, the Republican keeps offering up reminders that the high point of his political career, in many respects, was several presidencies ago.

In Muscatine Thursday, Santorum recalled going ?toe to toe with Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Ted Kennedy? on welfare reform, touting the issue expertise he gained on the House Ways and Means Committee. In Coralville, Santorum reminded voters that it had been he, back in the day, who wrote a book to rebut Hillary Clinton?s claim that ?it takes a village to raise a family, to raise our children.?

At a film screening in Des Moines earlier this month, Santorum launched into an anecdote that he introduced as ?a story about when I was debating the partial birth abortion bill in 1998? ? an episode he?s related numerous times, about sparring with California Sen. Barbara Boxer. In the second-to-last pre-caucus debate, Santorum boasted of having ?exposed the House banking scandal? in the early 1990s.

And Santorum often brags of having taken on the Democratic consulting team of Paul Begala and James Carville in his first Senate race ? 17 years ago.

?The symmetry in my political career in what we?re doing here is pretty amazing,? he mused at his Coralville stop this week. ?I ran against the author of Clintoncare in 1994.?

Santorum isn?t the only presidential candidate whose political career is firmly anchored in the 1990s: Mitt Romney made his first bid for office in 1994 and Gingrich?s reign as speaker spanned the middle of the decade.

Video: NASA hopes to answer questions about the Moon

>>> finally tonight here on earth this weekend is all about new year's eve. but for a team of nasa scientists, the focus will be a quarter of a million miles away . they will be monitoring a pair of spacecraft orbiting the moon, hoping to answer some age-old questions in what's being described as the biggest moon mission since man first landed there more than 40 years ago. here's nbc's george lewis .

>> reporter: millions of years ago, earth may have had not one, but two moons. then, according to theory they collided -- an event known as the big splat. that would explain the irregularities on the present day moon. all the valleys on the side we see. all the mountains on the other side.

>> scientists have not had a good way to track that down yet. this is the going of solving that mystery.

>> zero, and liftoff of the delta ii , journey to the center of the moon.

>> reporter: in september, nasa launched two lunar probes aboard the same rocket. they'll chase each other in orbit around the moon to study it from surface to center. the mission will be run from this control room in paspasadena, california. a critical point comes this weekend when the two craft fire to get into orbit around the moon.

>> this is the big crunch time. this weekend is going to be the time when it comes together or falls apart .

>> that's one small step for man --

>> reporter: for nasa it will be the most intense focus on the moon since the days of the apollo program .

>> it's very challenging but we have done a lot of practicing and we're ready to do that.

>> reporter: former astronaut sally ride will organize thousands of middle school students to tell nasa what pictures the spacecraft should take with their on-board cameras.

>> hopefully it will encourage kids to get more involved in science and engineering.

>> reporter: so this weekend while millions are watching the new year's ball drop in times square , nasa scientists will be watching the other illuminated ball that holds so many mysteries. george lewis , nbc news, pasadena, california.

China says finds no more excess toxins in milk (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's quality watchdog said it has found no further problems with milk tainted by high levels of carcinogenic mildew in tests of products by major dairy producers.

Public concern was triggered this week after milk giant Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd said its Sichuan plant had destroyed products found by a government quality watchdog to contain the cancer-causing substance aflatoxin.

Aflatoxin occurs naturally in the environment and is produced by certain common types of fungi. It can cause severe liver damage, including liver cancer.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement late on Friday that checks covering other major producers "did not discover levels of aflatoxin which exceed standards."

The companies tested included Mengniu, Beijing Sangyuan Foods Co, Yili Industrial Group Co, Nestle SA and Bright Dairy & Food Co, it said.

Fungi and the aflatoxin they produce can infect crops before harvest or during harvesting and storage. The tainted crops then enter the food chain either directly or indirectly via animal feed.

The official Xinhua news agency, citing a quality watchdog official, said the toxin had originated from cows eating mildewed feed.

The aflatoxin scare has since spread to some cooking oils and peanuts in the southern province of Guangdong.

These incidents are the latest in a string of safety scandals to hit China's food industry in recent years.

In 2008, at least six children died and nearly 300,000 became ill in China from drinking powdered milk laced with melamine, an industrial chemical added to low-quality or diluted milk to give misleadingly high protein readings.

Hugo Ch?vez Says the U.S. Maybe Gave Him Cancer | Indecision ...

Cigarettes, breathing, looking at the sun, sticking your head in a microwave, eating lead paint, etc. Add yet another item to the already long list of totally fun things that cause cancer: Ruling a South American country.

Venezuelan president Hugo Ch?vez recently insinuated that a plot by the U.S. could be behind?his and other political leader's?illnesses?

Chavez, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in June and had a baseball-sized tumor removed in Cuba, has called for a regional summit of leaders who have battled cancer including Brazilian President?Dilma Rousseff, her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Paraguay?s Fernando Lugo.

"I'm just sharing my thoughts, but it's very, very, very strange," Chavez said. "Evo take care of yourself, Correa, be careful, we just don?t know," he said, referring to Evo Morales and?Rafael Correa, the leaders of Bolivia and Ecuador.

The U.S. embassy in Caracas declined to comment on?Ch?vez's theories, seeing as how he also recently called President Obama a clown, said George W. Bush was the devil, and refers to his political enemies as "Imperial Yankees." Even though several of those theories may sound credible, there's no way our government is capable of giving specific leaders long-term diseases.

Or is there??After all, the U.S. did give Osama bin Laden that bullet-sized tumor.

2011 was 'worst year ever' for elephants

It's been a disastrous year for elephants, perhaps the worst since ivory sales were banned in 1989 to save the world's largest land animals from extinction, the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC said Thursday.

A record number of large seizures of elephant tusks represents at least 2,500 dead animals and shows that organized crime ? in particular Asian syndicates ? is increasingly involved in the illegal ivory trade and the poaching that feeds it, the group said.

Some of the seized tusks came from old stockpiles, the elephants having been killed years ago. It's not clear how many elephants were recently killed in Africa for their tusks, but experts are alarmed.

TRAFFIC's elephant and rhino expert Tom Milliken thinks criminals may have the upper hand in the war to save rare and endangered animals.

"As most large-scale ivory seizures fail to result in any arrests, I fear the criminals are winning," Milliken told The Associated Press.

Most cases involve ivory being smuggled from Africa into Asia, where growing wealth has fed the desire for ivory ornaments and for rhino horn that is used in traditional medicine, though scientists have proved it has no medicinal value.

"The escalation in ivory trade and elephant and rhino killing is being driven by the Asian syndicates that are now firmly enmeshed within African societies," Milliken said in a telephone interview from his base in Zimbabwe. "There are more Asians than ever before in the history of the continent, and this is one of the repercussions."

50 killed per month
All statistics are not yet in, and no one can say how much ivory is getting through undetected, but "what is clear is the dramatic increase in the number of large-scale seizures, over 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds) in weight, that have taken place in 2011," TRAFFIC said in a statement.

There were at least 13 large seizures this year, compared to six in 2010 with a total weight just under 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds).

In the most recent, and worst, case Malaysian authorities seized hundreds of African elephant tusks on Dec. 21 worth $1.3 million that were being shipped to Cambodia. The ivory was hidden in containers of handicrafts from Kenya's Mombasa port. Most large seizures have originated from Kenyan or Tanzanian ports, TRAFFIC said.

Fifty elephants a month are being killed, their tusks hacked off, in Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve, according to the Washington-based Environmental Investigation Agency.

With shipments so large, criminals have taken to shipping them by sea instead of by air, falsifying documents with help of corrupt officials, monitors said.

Milliken said some of the seized ivory has been identified as coming from government-owned stockpiles ? made up of confiscated tusks and those of dead elephants ? in another sign of corruption.

"In 23 years of compiling ivory seizure data ... this is the worst year ever for large ivory seizures. 2011 has truly been a horrible year for elephants," said Milliken.

Rhinos also have suffered. A record 443 rhino were killed in this year in South Africa, compared to 333 last year, according to National Geographic News Watch. South Africa is home to 90 percent of the rhinos left on the continent.

Africa's elephant population was estimated at between 5 million and 10 million before the big white hunters came to the continent with European colonization. Massive poaching for the ivory trade in the 1980s halved the remaining number of African elephants to about 600,000. Following the 1989 ban on ivory trade and concerted international efforts to protect the animals, elephant herds in east and southern Africa were thriving before the new threat arrived from Asia.

A report from Kenya's Amboseli national park highlighted the dangers. There had been almost no poaching in the park, which lies in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, for 30 years until a Chinese company was awarded the contract to build a highway nearby two years ago. Amboseli has lost at least four of its "big tuskers" since then.

China, Japan unveil deals to tighten finance ties

(AP)? BEIJING ? Chinese and Japanese leaders have unveiled initiatives to tighten financial links between East Asia's economic giants and sometime rivals ? measures that could expand use of China's tightly controlled currency abroad.

During a visit to Beijing by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, the two governments said Sunday they will encourage use of their own currencies for trade, which now is conducted mostly in U.S. dollars.

They also agreed to have Japanese companies sell bonds denominated in China's yuan, a move that could help promote Beijing's gradual campaign to expand use of its currency abroad.

Heart surgeon, 2 others die in helicopter crash

A heart surgeon from a Mayo Clinic in Florida flying across the northern corner of the state to retrieve a heart for transplant was among three people killed Monday in a helicopter crash, officials said.

The helicopter departed the clinic in Jacksonville around 5:45 a.m. but never arrived at the Gainesville hospital, Shands at University of Florida, about 60 miles southwest, said Kathy Barbour, a spokeswoman for Mayo, which is based in Rochester, Minn.

Heart surgeon Dr. Luis Bonilla, procurement technician David Hines and the pilot were killed.

They were on their way to pick up a heart for a patient at the Jacksonville hospital, Clinic spokesman Carl Oestreich told The Associated Press.

Another Mayo Clinic spokesman, Layne Smith, said the heart cannot be used in another transplant because its viability expired. Smith sayid the patient who had been scheduled to receive the heart continues to wait for a new organ.

The helicopter went down about 12 miles northeast of Palatka, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen. The town is about 40 miles east of Gainesville and about 45 miles south of Jacksonville.

Clay County Sheriff's Office dispatcher Myron White confirmed the three dead but had no more information to release about the crash in the remote, forested area away from roads. The National Transportation Safety Board also was investigating.

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville reported that there was light fog with overcast conditions in the area but no rain.

FAA records show the Bell 206 helicopter is operated by SK Jets. An employee who declined to give her name said the St. Augustine company had no immediate information.

Gary Robb, a Kansas City aviation attorney specializing in helicopter safety, said SK Jets is known as a careful and safe operator in the industry. The small, lightweight craft has low weight and speed capabilities and is primarily used by traffic reporters or police departments, Robb said.

"It's not usually used in donor flights," he said.

"If you're on a mission where time is sensitive, why use an engine that is low performance?" Robb said, adding that the helicopter has a cramped cabin.

An NTSB investigator will scour the crash site for clues and look into the pilot's experience and any factors that might have impaired the pilot, any environmental factors such as birds or low visibility that may have contributed to the crash, and any mechanical problems with the helicopter, he said.

The Bell 206 helicopter usually has an older engine no longer installed in new helicopters, Robb said.

"We've seen a number of instances where that engine simply failed," Robb said.

The crash and others like it illustrate the delicate nature of transporting organs.

In 1990, a surgeon and an assistant flying to pick up a donor heart for a patient were killed in a plane crash in New Mexico. And in 2007, a twin-engine plane carrying a team of surgeons and technicians ? along with a set of lungs on ice being brought to a patient already prepped for surgery ? crashed into the choppy waters of Lake Michigan. Six were killed.

Doctors ultimately got another set of donor lungs that were transplanted into the patient.

New Solar Energy Monitoring Application for Android-Powered Smart Phones

?

The options offered by smart phone technology and apps are virtually limitless. We?ve featured a number of green apps here on CleanTechnica, but I can?t remember hearing or reading about one for monitoring solar panel performance.. until now.?SunPower has just unveiled one for its customers.

Last week,?SunPower, a world-leading producer of solar cell, solar panels, and solar systems (& California?s most popular solar panel last I checked), announced ?a new solar energy monitoring application for Android?-powered smartphones to its SunPower Monitoring System portfolio.?

Basically, customers can track both their home energy use and environmental savings and the performance of their solar power system with the app. They can look at such data in real-time or historically. They can also share that info with friends and family.

The app is free and can be downloaded from Android Market. Check it out if you have a SunPower system and drop us any comments you have about it!

I imagine there are other apps like this out there (but maybe not) ? drop a note in the comments if you know of and recommend any.

Guinea-Bissau quells attempted coup, official says (AP)

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau ? A top military official attempted unsuccessfully to seize power early Monday, an army official said, while the ill leader of this tiny, coup-prone West African country is believed to be undergoing medical treatment abroad.

Army chief Antonio Indjai said authorities had arrested navy chief Natchuto Bubo. Top officials were meeting to discuss the situation Monday evening.

"There was an attempted coup d'etat but the situation is under the control of the army and government," Indjai said, giving no further details.

Lawmaker Lucio Rodrigues said the event seemed to have little effect.

"Life is continuing much as you would expect for a day after Christmas," he said. "Cars are circulating, there are people on the street, the attempt hasn't had much of an effect on the population."

Rodrigues added that Indjai made a brief statement saying only that in the early hours of Monday "an attempt was made to reverse the constitutional order" but that "the situation is now under control."

The reported coup attempt comes as President Malam Bacai Sanha has recently sought medical treatment in France. The leader was elected in 2009 following the assassination of Guinea-Bissau's previous leader.

Sanha's health has been the subject of intense speculation and he is known to suffer from diabetes. He has been hospitalized for long stretches in Senegal and France with the government always describing the visits as routine.

A French official confirmed in early December that Sanha was being treated in a Paris hospital. The Foreign Ministry on Monday declined to say whether he was still in France.

Since independence from Portugal in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has been beset by a series of coups, military revolts and political assassinations.

The country's former president, Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, was assassinated on March 2, 2009, hours after the head of the army was killed in a bomb explosion.

Less than a year later, mutinous soldiers seized the head of the armed forces and placed the prime minister under house arrest in an apparent coup attempt.

The lawlessness has in recent years attracted South American drug traffickers, who have used the country as a transit point for shipping cocaine to Europe.

The violence and instability also have taken their toll on the country's economic development. The nation sits at the bottom of most economic and health indices. The majority of people live without electricity or clean running water, and there are few job opportunities for young people. The average life expectancy in Guinea-Bissau is just 46 years.

Sony Details U.S. PlayStation Vita Launch Titles

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

The PlayStation Vita won't hit American stores until Feb. 22 (Feb. 15 should you purchase the pre-order bundle), but Sony has already revealed the list of launch titles that will be available for purchase on day one.

The first round of Sony-published titles include Army Corps of Hell, Escape Plan, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Little Deviants, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and wipEout 2048. Launch titles from Sony's third-party partners will include FIFA Soccer, Lumines Electronic Symphony, Touch My Katamari, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Michael Jackson: The Experience, Plants vs. Zombies, and Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition.

Pricing for all PS Vita software will range between $9.99-$49.99. The titles will be available via PS Vita game cards at retail stores or digitally via the PlayStation Network. A select number of PS Vita games, however, will be available exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

The Wi-Fi-powered PS Vita model will be available for $249.99 and the 3G/Wi-Fi PS Vita model will be available for $299.99. The pre-order bundle (which includes a 3G/Wi-Fi PS Vita,?limited edition case, 4GB PS Vita memory card, and the Little Deviants game) will cost $349.

We recently had the opportunity to get hands-on with a not-quite-final version of the PS Vita (see the slideshow below). It's a sleek device that resembles a streamlined, upgraded version of the PlayStation Portable. What's new in terms of physical design is the analog thumbstick (which replaces the analog pad) and a second stick, which brings it closer in design to the PS3 controller.

Screenshots of Windows 8 build 8172 emerge, looks a lot like Windows 8

Hope you weren't expecting anything groundbreaking from the latest leaks of Windows 8, because so far as we can tell, build 8172 looks just about like the build we toyed with back at... BUILD. That said, these do look a wee bit more polished than earlier betas, and there are a few appreciated shots of the store and a new look for settings. If that kind of nerd-speak gets you all hot and bothered, head on down to the source link with your eyes peeled.

"X Factor" finale jumps 31 percent giving Fox big win (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The season finale of "The X Factor" enjoyed a sizable boost over last week to hand Fox an easy win Thursday night, according to preliminary numbers.

On a night that was marked by repeats from the competing networks, "The X Factor" from 8 to 10 p.m. jumped 31 percent over last week's performance, taking a 3.8 rating/11 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, and grew 25 percent in total viewership with 12.4 million total viewers. The strong showing gave Fox a win for the night in both the demographic and total viewership.

NBC ran "Who's Still Standing?" at 8, which received a 1.5/5 and 5.2 million total viewers, followed by repeats until "Prime Suspect" at 10, which drew a 1.0/3 and 4.4 million total viewers.

At ABC, the night began with the holiday special "Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice" at 8, which posted a 1.1/3 and 3.8 million total viewers, followed by an episode of "Prep & Landing" at 8:30, which also received a 1.1/3 and 3.6 million total viewers. CHP: Ford driver hits pedestrian on Graham Hill Road

FELTON -- A 52-year-old man from Salinas was struck by the driver of a Ford Escort on Graham Hill Road near Highway 9 on Wednesday evening, the CHP reported.

The pedestrian had major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, said CHP officer Sarah Jackson. His medical status had not been updated Thursday morning, Jackson said.

About 5:45 p.m., the man was walking north on Graham Hill Road across westbound traffic outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by the driver of a 1997 Ford Escort traveling west, Jackson said. The driver was a 72-year-old woman from Ben Lomond, Jackson said.

The woman in the car was not injured and stayed at the scene, the CHP said. The cause of the collision is being investigated, Jackson said.

Hearing Devices More Apt to Fail in Children Who Had Meningitis (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- For children who have an implanted cochlear device, rates for replacement due to device failure are low. However, children who have hearing loss caused by bacterial meningitis before a device was implanted appear to be at increased risk for it to fail, a new study finds.

A cochlear implant (CI) is a small device that helps provide a sense of sound to people who have severe hearing loss or are deaf, according to the U.S. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

In this study, Canadian researchers looked at the medical records of 738 children who received a total of 971 cochlear implant devices between 1990 and 2010. The children's median age when they first received a cochlear implant was 33 months.

During the 20-year study period, 34 of the children required reimplantation, a rate of about 3 percent. The average time to device failure was 61 months. Seven of the 34 children had meningitis before they received their first cochlear implant.

After reimplantation, most of the children maintained or improved their best speech performance before the failure of the initial device, the researchers found.

"In conclusion, we found a very low rate of CI failure in a pediatric implant series and several related factors that may account for this low rate," wrote Dr. Antoine Eskander, of the University of Toronto, and colleagues in a journal news release.

"Children who develop meningitis before CI appear to be at an increased risk of device failure. Most patients maintain or improve their best preoperative level of speech perception after CI reimplantation, but patients with gradual device failure have less chance of good hearing recovery," they concluded.

The study appears in the December issue of the journal Archives of Otolaryngology -- Head & Neck Surgery.

'Lite version' of Ubuntu takes Nook Tablet for a spin, ROM can't come soon enough (video)

We've heard the promises of bringing Ubuntu past its comfort zone and into the mobile space, but who wants to wait until 2014 when a home remedy can deliver precisely that right now. XDA-Developer member loglud has been grooming a way to bring the OS to your Barnes & Noble tablet, because -- you know -- we're all longing for slates with desktop-scale operating systems on them. At the moment, you can get a quick glimpse of Ubuntu running on the Nook, but porting can only be done via a VNC Server, which opens up plenty of potential avenues for lag to mar the experience. Notably, the delays should all but vanish once a ROM becomes available. Now, if we could only get Jane Lynch to sing her way through letting us know the Nook Tablet can also run Ubuntu, we'd be set. Have a peek at the Glee-less demo vid just after the break.

[Thanks, orangejuice]
