Activists say more than 250 people were killed in Syria on Thursday, including 155 civilians. According to Reuters, the number would make Thursday the bloodiest day since the start of the conflict in March 2011.

Syrian rebels took control of a border crossing with Iraq on Thursday, an Iraqi army general told the Associated Press. According to Brig. General Qassim al-Dulaimi, gunmen forced Syrian border guards to leave the checkpoint but did not cross into Iraq. Al-Dulaimi could not confirm earlier reports that Syrian rebels had taken over all border crossings with Iraq.

At least 7 people were killed during evening prayers when Syrian army troops shelled a mosque in Deir al-Zour, activists said. According to witnesses, the mosque was packed with worshippers before the start of Ramadan. "Around 20 people were pulled from the rubble with missing limbs and bad wounds. The number of dead will likely rise," activist Abu al-Tayeb al-Deiri told Reuters.

Iraq's Deputy Interior Minister Adnan al-Assadi told AFP that Syrian rebels captured all border crossings between Iraq and Syria.
The White House described Russia and China's veto of a U.N. Security Council resolution threatening new sanctions against Damascus as "highly regrettable" and "highly unfortunate."
White House spokesman Jay Carney added that the U.S. does not favor extending the U.N. observer mission in Syria. Members of the Security Council are expected to decide on the possible extension of the mission's mandate later today.

Reuters reports that Syrian rebels attacked the main police headquarters in Damascus. A resident told the news service by phone that heavy gunfire rocked the neighborhood. "It is now dying down but the streets around the police command remain empty," the resident said.
