The theater and the tavern ? two public meeting places as old as civilization itself ? will come together on Oct. 9 with the opening of the Library, a new cocktail lounge inside the Public Theater. The mezzanine-level bar, along with a full-service bar in the Lafayette Street institution?s ground-floor lobby, are part of $40 million revitalization project that is finishing up this month.
The creation of the two bars, along with an expanded food and drinks service at the Public?s longstanding cabaret bo?te, Joe?s Pub, have been overseen by the restaurateur Andrew Carmellini and his partner Luke Ostrom. (They collaborated on Locanda Verde and the Dutch.) Mr. Carmellini has put Michael Oliver in the kitchen to run a new, eclectic American dinner menu in both Joe?s and the Library, and the mixologist Tiffany Short ? who has worked at the Gibson, in Washington, and the Dutch ? to put together the cocktail list with the project-wide beverage director, Josh Nadel.
The Library?s menu will offer more than 30 wines, a half-dozen draft beers and a cocktail list that will change seasonally. ?I come from a school that is classically oriented when it comes to cocktails,? said Ms. Short, who will be working full time behind the bar. ?I wanted to stick to that old-school feel. I tried to have something for everybody there: something boozy, something citrusy.? Except for the Oriental, a rye cocktail from the early 1900s, the drinks will all be originals, though based on tried and true mixing templates. (There is a sling, a flip, etc.)
Somewhat surprisingly, given the bar?s location, none of the cocktail names cite plays, players and anything theatrical. ?I?m more a liquor nerd than a theater nerd,? Ms. Short explained.
The lobby bar, being a higher-volume affair, will offer drinks that lend themselves to quicker service, like seasonal punches and maybe a grog come winter.
The Library will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day, and is open to all, including ?people who are attending the show, artists involved with the shows and people who want a drink for the night,? Ms. Short said.
?It?s an island bar with stools all around it,? she said. ?The bar is included in the embrace of the room. It?s a very warm room. It?s very community oriented ? just like the Public Theater.?
