Smithsonian reopening in DC, no major storm damage

(AP) ? The Smithsonian Institution's museums and National Zoo are reopening in Washington after shutting their doors for two days because of superstorm Sandy.

Wednesday's reopening will come as welcome news to tourists visiting the capital who found few businesses open as the storm passed through.

Smithsonian officials say all the museums and their facilities in Maryland and Virginia are in good condition. There was no damage to the collections. Some buildings did have leaks during the storm, but maintenance staff was on hand to place sandbags in some areas to keep the buildings mostly dry inside.

At the National Zoo, officials say the animals weathered the storm with no problem.

The Smithsonian says its National Museum of the American Indian in New York remains closed, but its collection is safe.

Retire Late and Work Like a Mule | The Cornell Daily Sun

If you walk through the Arts Quad, you are many times more likely to see a Jimi Hendrix or Grateful Dead shirt than you are to see a t-shirt advertising almost any contemporary act. How does the current music industry cope with this favoritism and the greatness of music from the late ?60s and early ?70s? Some seem to reply, ?Just live those days as long as possible.? This seems to be the solution Gov?t Mule, an experimental blues band, applies. The group put on a show Saturday night at the State Theatre and presented an act that was essentially a comforting haze of sounds, rhythms and lyrics echoing the ?60s.

This presentation aligned with the ethos of the crowd, populated with many who spent their adolescence during the blossoming of psychedelic rock. Bearded boomers, bikers and bluesmen filled the ornate Renaissance-style theater that turns 84 this year. The listeners received a set list so similar to one possible in the Age of Aquarius that their nostalgia drives were definitely satisfied. The loudest audience response came during Mule?s elaborate, whining rendition of The Beatles? ?I Want You (She?s So Heavy)? and a reggae/raga slow-down of The Steve Miller Band classic ?The Joker.? For attendees largely in the reflection stage of their lives, looking back at their youth and identifying with the lyrics was an obvious, sentimental hit.

The set list also covered ?She Said, She Said? and ?Tomorrow Never Knows,? both by The Beatles; ?Don?t Step on the Grass, Sam,? a ?60s pro-marijuana legalization hit from Steppenwolf; ?Higher Ground? by Stevie Wonder; the end of Led Zeppelin?s ?Black Dog? and a song Led Zeppelin seemingly plagiarized: ?How Many More Years? by Howlin? Wolf (sound like Zeppelin?s ?How Many More Times? at all?).

The original songs from Mule bore the same influences. ?Streamline Woman,? one of its most successful hits, has a clear Grateful Dead semblance (check out The Dead?s ?Easy Wind?). Much of the lyrics reflected themes of the blues and countercultural generations, not to mention the band?s name: Gov?t Mule, an allusion to our obsequity to the ?man.? This thumbing of the nose at authority was a rallying cry of the ?60s that is often subject to parody today.

The easiest comparison for Gov?t Mule is to the Allman Brothers. Mule?s late cofounder and bass guitarist, Allen Woody, was a member of the Brothers after they reunited in 1989. In his tenure with the Brothers, Allen played with guitarist Warren Haynes, future cofounder of Gov?t Mule and associated member of Phil Lesh?s Further, the post-Jerry Garcia incarnation of the Grateful Dead. Mule still plays many tunes by the Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin and Grateful Dead and attracts a following left over from the deaths and disengagements of many of these bands. In order to maintain a sound quality comparable to these former acts, their website claims that they are ?one of the hardest working bands in rock history.?

Gov?t Mule?s deficit of originality is definitely bridged by its incredible technical dexterity. The opener ? The Lee Boys, a Parliament Funkadelic and Taj Mahal mashup ? suggests that these bands are out to service an audience who doesn?t want change. Even though the band was relatively stationary on stage and the audience members were forcibly stationary in their seats, the energy of the music sustained interest. The ?60s and ?70s were an incredible Renaissance of arts, culture and passion that was so impressive that it warrants a lengthy afterlife. You may call these concerts wakes of waning genres or just plain irrelevant, but celebrating the past is much more successful and plausible than celebrating the future.

How To Trade Currencies Like The Pros - Search Forex

If you know what you are doing, forex can be very profitable, so it definitely pays to do some research before you begin. Fortunately, simulation demo accounts are available to give you the opportunity to do just that. Use the following tips to give you the advantage in Forex trading.

Do not trade over 5% of your account. This way you will have room to make a mistake. Mistakes are going to be made, and if you only used 5% or less of your account, you will be able to make a quick recovery. Take some time away from watching the market, because the longer your eyes are on it the more you are going to want to trade and impulse trading is never good. It is important to remember that it is always better to be conservative with your trading.

In order to place stop losses properly in Forex, you need to use your intuition and feelings along with your technical analysis to be successful. When it comes to trading you will have to make compromises between your technical knowledge and how you gut feels about the situation. The stop loss can only be successfully mastered with regular practice and the knowledge that comes with experience.

Put some effort into developing your ability to process all of the data you need to manage. Synthesizing information from data coming from different sources is essential in Forex trading.

TIP! Research specific currency pairs prior to choosing the ones you will begin trading. Don?t spend endless hours doing research.

Keep your composure, because the last thing you want to do is trade based on emotion rather than knowledge. Remain calm. Do not lose your focus. Exercise self-restraint. Making rational decisions is the key to winning.

Many people who trade on the forex market do not realize that they need both patience and the financial backing to make a commitment to a long-term plan if they decide to trade against the markets. When you are starting out you should never attempt against the market trading. This can be very devastating.

You should never trade Foreign Exchange with the use of emotion. You will be less likely to take stupid risks because you are feeling emotional. You need to be rational when it comes to making trade decisions.

Do not rely on other traders? positions to select your own. Many forex traders tell you all about their successful strategies, but neglect to let you in on how many losing trades they?ve had. In forex trading, past performance indicates very little about a trader?s predictive accuracy. Plan out your own strategy; don?t let other people make the call for you.

TIP! When working with Forex, start out by practicing on a demo trade. Trading on a demo platform is the best form of preparation to get oneself ready to begin real, serious trading.

Do not let your emotions get in your way. It is extremely important to stay level headed whenever you are dealing with the Foreign Exchange market.

Study the financial news, and stay informed about anything happening in your currency markets. Speculation drives the direction of currencies, and speculation is most often started on the news. Consider setting up email or text alerts for your markets so that you will be able to capitalize on big news fast.

Use a demo account before using a real account on forex. In order to have a good grasp of this kind of account, you have to take two months to study it. Remember that only 10 percent of beginners experience success in Forex. The remaining 9 out of 10 are disappointed simply because they have not acquired sufficient know-how.

Use a mini account to start your Forex trading. This can help you limit your losses and can be a nice practice trading platform. While you may prefer to dive right in and start using an account that permits larger trades, it is possible to learn a lot in 12 months of analyzing the trades you have made and their profitability.

TIP! No purchase is necessary to play with a demo forex account. All you need to do is visit a Forex website and set up a free account.

Do not allow your emotions to affect your Forex trading. If you trade based on greed, anger, or panic, you can wind up in a lot of trouble. It?s impossible to completely remove emotion from the equation, but if they are the primary driver of your trading decisions, you are in trouble.

Forex is a great money making strategy, once you have done enough research to know exactly what you have to do to make that money. Keep in mind that you should keep your knowledge sharp and current as things evolve. Keep an eye on the top forex sites to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to forex trading strategies.

What Mommy Does Interview

As a member of the personal finance community, I?m amazed at how many people are a part of it. Unfortunately that often means that I can?t always keep up with everyone. It?s a shame?because?there are some wonderful bloggers with their stories and advice on handling finances responsibly and with fun.

To counteract that and get the word out on other bloggers, I?ve started the Sunday Blogger series. It?s my hope that you?ll discover some new voices in the series.

This week we?re in for a treat. Lena from What Mommy Does is sharing her answers.?

Why did you start What Mommy Does?

I?ve been a personal writer and blogger for over 4 years, but only recently decided to branch out with my own websites. I started with a personal portfolio site and added a tax blog, but quickly found myself wishing I had a place to write about everyday things like running a household, working from home, and being a stay-at-home mom.

What Mommy Does is my way to reach out to other moms like myself who try to do their best keeping their children and homes in check while balancing everything else in their lives.

How long have you?ve been involved with finance and blogging?

For many years, I was the Personal Budgeting & Finance Feature Writer for Suite101.com. Since 2007, I?ve contributed over 400 articles on a variety of topics with an emphasis on personal finance, taxes, and consumer education. I still contribute occasionally to Suite101, but mainly focus on my own blogs.

How do you handle your own finances? What system do you employ with?budgets, investing, and career?

I use Quicken to keep track of spending categories, and I use a plain old Excel spreadsheet to make our monthly budget. I?m much better at telling others how to keep their budgets in check than I am at actually maintaining my own budgeting routine, though! I will stay on top of the incoming transactions in Quicken and comparing budget vs. actual expenditures in Excel for a few months, then I will lapse and fall behind in this area.

Luckily, I make up for this lackadaisical approach to budgeting by employing a constantly frugal mindset. I am allergic to paying full price for anything ? I constantly have to reign in my crazy couponing tendencies, and I shop second-hand whenever possible. I?m a big fan of making saving fun, so I use ImpulseSave for the way it makes saving into a game. I?ve also been known to save for a purchase by squirreling away money in a shoebox $10 at a time whenever I can get my hands on my husband?s cash. ;)

I?m not a huge fan of the annual fees that come with mutual funds. I like investing on my own and do so through Scottrade.
When it comes to career, my husband holds the main job in our household, and I work to supplement that income. We live as if he is the only one who makes money, so anything I earn can be used 100% for whatever goal we have at the time ? right now we?re focused on funding our 2012 retirement accounts and college funds.

After those have been knocked out, we plan on putting away money for our next vehicle. Our current family car has nearly 200,000 miles on it, so it?s time to consider the inevitable. ;)

What?s the biggest financial mistake you?ve ever made? What did you learn from it?

The mistake that?s cost me the most $$ is when I left my last job and took my sweet time lining up a new insurance policy. Because of my procrastination, we were left uninsured for 24 hours (seriously) between policies. Wouldn?t you know that 4 hours before our new policy kicked in (at midnight), my daughter had an accident and we had to go to the emergency room! That mistake cost me nearly $1,500!! You better believe I won?t let that happen again!

What are your goals this year and beyond with What Mommy Does?

My main goal for this year and early next is to establish a regular posting schedule. I had my third child earlier this year and am still trying to figure out our new ?normal.? Beyond that, I would like to grow my readership and monetize the site more effectively so I can make it a real source of income for my family. We need a way to pay for lots of college tuition! ;)

Thanks again Lena for signing up for the series!?If you?re interesting in being interviewed as part of the Sunday Blogger series, please email me.

LG's 84-inch 4K TV goes on sale in the US for $19,999, home mortgage optional

LG 84LM9600 84-inch 4K TV

Sony might have beaten LG to the punch in the 84-inch 4K TV wars with its XBR-84X900 pre-orders, but you've got to be on the field to win -- and the first to show up for battle is LG's 84LM9600, which is officially on sale and in stores as of today. Anyone who can find a retailer carrying the Ultra High-Definition LCD can drop $19,999 to get what will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of the room, even if there's hardly any content to fully exploit those six million extra pixels. LG does have a $5,000 price advantage over the Sony 4K set shipping next month, although we won't kid ourselves here. Anyone who can see themselves spending five digits on bleeding-edge TV technology is either wealthy enough not to mind or busy explaining to the family why home refinancing is totally worth it.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy raged through the Bahamas early Friday after leaving 21 people dead across the Caribbean, following a path that could see it blend with a winter storm and reach the U.S. East Coast as a super-storm next week.

Sandy knocked out power, flooded roads and cut off islands in the storm-hardened Bahamas as it swirled past Cat Island and Eleuthera, but authorities reported no deaths in the scattered archipelago.

"Generally people are realizing it is serious," said Caroline Turnquest, head of the Red Cross in the Bahamas, who said 20 shelters were opened on the main island of New Providence.

Sandy, which weakened to a category 1 hurricane Thursday night, caused havoc in Cuba early in the day, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain toppled houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cuba's deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage.

Sandy also killed one person while crossing Jamaica on Wednesday and 10 in Haiti, where heavy rains from the storm's outer bands caused flooding in the impoverished and deforested country.

Early Friday, the hurricane's center was about 145 miles (235 kilometers) east-southeast of Freeport, Bahamas. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and was moving north-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

Forecasters warned that Sandy will likely mix with a winter storm to create a monster storm in the eastern U.S. next week whose effects will be felt along the entire Atlantic Coast from Florida to Maine and inland to Ohio.

Sandy, which crossed Cuba and reached the Bahamas as a category 2 hurricane, was expected to maintain its category 1 storm status for the next few days.

In the Bahamas, power was out on Acklins Island and most roads there were flooded, government administrator Berkeley Williams said.

On Ragged Island in the southern Bahamas, the lone school was flooded.

"We have holes in roofs, lost shingles and power lines are down," said Charlene Bain, local Red Cross president. "But nobody lost a life, that's the important thing."

Steven Russell, an emergency management official in Nassau, said docks on the western side of Great Inagua island had been destroyed and the roof of a government building was partially ripped off.

Sooner Halvorson, a 36-year-old hotel owner from Colorado who recently moved to the Bahamas, said she and her husband, Matt, expected to ride out the storm with their two young children, three cats, two dogs and a goat at their Cat Island resort.

"We brought all of our animals inside," she said, though she added that a horse stayed outside. "She's a 40-year-old horse from the island. She's been through tons of hurricanes."

On Great Exuma island, guest house operator Veronica Marshall supplied her only customer with a flashlight and some food before Sandy bore down. She said she was confident that she and her business would make it through intact.

"I'm 73 years old and I've weathered many storms," she said.

Tropical storm conditions were possible for Florida's southeastern coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to churn through the central and northwest Bahamas by Friday afternoon and then head northward off the U.S. coast.

With storm conditions projected to hit New Jersey with tropical storm-force winds Tuesday, there was a 90 percent chance that most of the U.S. East Coast would get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday, U.S. forecaster Jim Cisco said.

In an announcement at the end of Cuba's Thursday night newscast, Cuban authorities said the island's 11 dead included a 4-month-old boy who was crushed when his home collapsed and an 84-year-old man in Santiago province.

Santiago, Cuba's second largest city near the eastern tip of the island, was spared the worst of the storm, which also slammed the provinces of Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas.

There were no reports of injuries at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but there were downed trees and power lines, said Kelly Wirfel, a base spokeswoman. Officials canceled a military tribunal session scheduled for Thursday for the prisoner charged in the 2000 attack on the Navy destroyer USS Cole.

In Haiti, Joseph Edgard Celestin, a spokesman for the civil protection office, said the country's death toll stood at nine, including three people who died while trying to cross storm-swollen rivers in southwestern Haiti. He did not provide specifics of how other people died.

Officials reported flooding across Haiti, where many of the 370,000 people still displaced by the devastating 2010 earthquake scrambled for shelter. More than 1,000 people were evacuated from 11 quake settlements, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Sandy was blamed for the death of an elderly man in Jamaica.

APUA seeks loan to repay APC debt | Antigua Observer Newspaper

By Kyle Christian - Friday, October 26th, 2012.

Minister of Finance Harold Lovell

ST JOHN?S, Antigua ? Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is negotiating with local banks for a loan to restructure the nearly $37 million in debt, owed to the Antigua Power Company (APC).

Speaking on OBSERVER Radio?s Voice of the People, Minister of Finance Harold Lovell said APUA?s problems will not be solved overnight and needs a lasting solution.

?APUA is currently negotiating with a commercial bank with a view to taking a long term loan so that they will be in a position to liquidate the debt to APC in its entirety,? he said.

In a press release printed in the October 19, edition of this paper, APUA noted that APC charges 12 per cent interest on its debt adding, ?This has placed a severe strain on the company.?

It is not known what interest rate APUA will be seeking from the commercial banks, only that it is negotiating with several.

?They are speaking to more than one bank, but the discussions are most advanced with one particular bank,? Lovell said.

He added that APUA senior management has been in talks with a consultant in an effort to reorganise the statutory company.

On Monday government paid $2 million to APC as part of a deal to prevent it from following through with a threat to shut off most of the island?s electricity.

The finance and economy minister said central government had historically never paid for the electricity it consumed. However, in 2010 it signed a Memorandum of Understanding to pay $1 million a month to APUA, which would liquidate the debt, owed and pay down on current consumption.

?That $1 million a month is divided into $500,000 by way of set off of the ABST that is collected by APUA on our behalf, which is not paid over,? he said.

The remaining $500,000 is injected directly into APUA on a monthly basis.

?There is no such thing as free electricity. Somebody always pays and we are committed to being on a path whereby whatever is consumed is paid for,? Lovell said.

But while APUA is seeking loans to pay its debts, the company is owed millions.

Earlier this year APUA?s Chairman Clarvis Joseph said EC $682 million was owed to APUA.

He had disclosed that government is responsible for $330 million of this, while the bill for statutory corporations is almost $19 million.

Private businesses accounted for roughly $50 million of the state utility company?s receivables.

Rockford Area Historical Society News & Update

Terry Konkle Photo by Cliff Hill

Terry Konkle ? President

?

One day last week a long time friend and I did some reminiscing about Rockford athletics and considered the changes over the years. This experience caused me to recall other memories of our area, and I thought I would mention a few in this column.

Let?s begin with a few of the many places that have changed! There used to be a Texaco gas station (Fonger?s) where a bike shop is today. There was a movie theater where a parking lot now exists behind Gliks. There was a Sunoco station on the northeast corner of Fremont and Division (I often bought my Sunday paper there). A Men?s Shop run by Howard Morehouse was in part of Aunt Candy?s present day building. A barber shop with its own entrance was on Main Street in the back of what used to be Power?s Drug Store (now a frame shop). An old house stood about where the Rotary Pavilion is today.

Some readers will remember the building of the new bridge extending Division Street over the river and the removal of several homes. How about two of our well known doctors with offices in houses? Doctor Ferrand practiced out of a house where Rockford Community Federal Credit Union now does business, and Doctor DeMaagd in the house which was just renovated by Morris Builders. A lot of young athletes played on a baseball field at Rotary Park or at a very nice ball diamond by Parkside Elementary School. Fields were also located behind Valley View school for a time and then in front of the school.

Tennis courts were across the street from Parkside school on Lewis Street (basketball courts today), and gas pumps were located between the courts and the school building. I remember filling the tanks of cars used for Driver?s Education at those pumps.

The area behind the old high school on North Main (Administration Office etc. today) was our home football field for nearly thirty years and then a practice area for over forty more. Today, a community garden area has taken over part of the space.

Of course, the recent demolition of many of the buildings housing Wolverine World Wide has changed the landscape on Main Street. I am sure that many readers have their Wolverine recollections. As a teacher at Rockford High School and an advisor to the National Honor Society for several years, I only had to make a phone call to Wolverine and our annual banquet expenses would be taken care of by the company.

Finally, I need to recognize Jan Trapp and Barbara Driscoll for knowing that Fremont Street was named after a presidential candidate John Fremont (1856). Dayton Street was named after his running mate William Dayton. They lost their bid for the presidency. Next week I will present another ?Nugget of Rockford History? question concerning an event that greatly tested our community and its members. We responded in a typical positive Rockford fashion. We met the challenge ?head on? and showed all what our area could do!

Bill Gates Talks Windows Future, Touch Interfaces (Slashdot)

Apple borrowing from BSD was a brilliant move. OS9 (the predecessor to OSX) was absolutely horrible. Slow, prone to crashing, and it ran on PowerPC chips that were far slower than Intel chips. When Apple brought Jobs back it was partly because of the operating system that NeXT had developed that was based on BSD. It evolved into what is now OSX.

Apple did not invent BSD or Linux or UNIX but what they did do was take a very stable, open source, version of UNIX (BSD) and put a beautifully appealing graphical front end on it (AQUA). I would argue that OSX is the most user friendly version of any UNIX or Linux based kernel. It's very stable, it's easy to use and it looks nice. I would bet that a lot of Mac users don't even know, or care, that it's based on UNIX. They just know that it works and is enjoyable to use.

Apple hasn't invented a lot of things but they have taken what others have done and made it better. That's innovation. In the same way that Android looks and works very much like IOS. In the same way that nearly every modern smartphone uses a touch interface. Apple didn't invent the touch interface either, they just perfected it. Some people think that Microsoft "stole" the GUI from Apple, who in turn "stole" it from XEROX. Who knows?

In my view, none of that stuff is stealing. It's simply the industry realizing that there is a better way to do things and then everyone embraces it. Balmer and Gates have seen the writing on the wall. PC sales are down drastically. For many people, particularly in developing countries, a smartphone is their first and only internet enabled device. That's where the growth is. So Windows is going to have to evolve if it wants to stay relevant in the consumer space. Time will tell how successful it is.

Parents look on the bright side of kids' worries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Parents consistently overestimate their children's optimism and downplay their worries, according to new research by psychologists at the University of California, Davis, Center for Mind and Brain.

The findings suggest that secondhand evaluations by parents or other adults of children's emotional well-being need to be treated with caution.

Many psychologists and researchers have long held that children under the age of seven cannot accurately report how they feel, said Kristin Lagattuta, associate professor of psychology at UC Davis, who led the study. So behavioral scientists frequently rely on the impressions of parents, teachers and other adults.

However, several studies have shown that parents think their kids are smarter than they really are -- for example, parents often overestimate how well their children will perform on math, language or other cognitive tests.

"We thought this 'positivity bias' also might apply to how parents perceive their children's emotional well-being," Lagattuta said.

Lagattuta, with Liat Sayfan, a postdoctoral researcher at the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain, and Christi Bamford, a former graduate student at UC Davis, made the discovery while conducting larger studies on individual differences in children's social reasoning.

Rather than rely just on parent questionnaires, the researchers decided to assess kids' views of their own emotions.

They developed a picture-based rating scale that children could use to rate how often they felt different kinds of emotions. The team got the children used to the scale with basic questions such as how often they eat a particular food or wear clothes of a particular color.

In three separate studies involving more than 500 children ages 4 through 11, they found that parents consistently rated their children as being less worried and more optimistic than the children rated themselves.

The questions involved common childhood anxieties such as being scared of the dark, or worries about something bad happening to a family member.

Lagattuta and her colleagues also found that parents' own emotions biased not only how they perceived their children's emotions, but also the degree of discrepancy between the parent and child reports.

The fact that there was a difference between adults and children in rating both anxiety and optimism showed that there wasn't a simple effect of children giving themselves higher scores for everything, Lagattuta said. Instead, children consistently provided higher ratings than parents when reporting their worries and lower ratings than parents when evaluating their feelings of optimism.

Previous research with parents suffering from anxiety or depression have shown that parents' own emotions influence how they evaluate their children's feelings, Lagattuta added. The current findings show that this is a mainstream phenomenon not specific to adults with mood disorders.

The results do not invalidate previous work involving parent reports of children's emotions, Lagattuta said. But they do show that secondhand evaluations by parents or other adults need to be treated with care. Ideally, researchers should get emotion reports of children from multiple sources, including the child, Lagattuta said.

Awareness of this parental positivity bias may also encourage adults to be more attuned to emotional difficulties children may be facing, she noted.

Brent rises towards $109 after China data, but gains capped

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude futures climbed towards $109 a barrel on Wednesday, snapping a six-day losing streak after economic data from China suggested a strengthening recovery in the world's No. 2 oil consumer.

China's manufacturers saw growth shrink for a 12th successive month in October, but output stood at a three-month high and order books were the most robust since April, preliminary results of a purchasing managers survey showed.

The data helped allay concerns that the global economy may be slowing faster than previously expected, as a recent spate of poor U.S. corporate earnings and outlooks had indicated.

Brent crude had risen 46 cents to $108.71 a barrel by 0239 GMT. It fell for a sixth straight session on Tuesday, when it hit an intraday low of $107.31, the weakest since September 20 and below its 100-day moving average at $107.42.

U.S. oil gained 44 cents to $87.11, snapping a four-day decline. The front-month contract slumped more than 3 percent on Tuesday to touch a session-low of $85.69, the lowest since July 13.

"The PMI data is supportive for commodities and I expect the crude market to be buoyant," said Ker Chung Yang, senior investment analyst at Phillip Futures Pte Ltd.

"The upside for oil has been dampened by global economic concerns in Europe and China. But the upbeat PMI data from China is relieving concerns of slower growth."

Oil prices have been under pressure in the past few days because of a weak demand outlook, although fears of possible supply disruption due to unrest in the Middle East have lent some support.

Faced with weakening revenue, three of the largest U.S. companies, including Dow Chemical Co, warned on Tuesday that they would cut jobs to protect profits.

But technical charts suggest Brent could end its current modest rebound and fall again towards $105.35, while U.S. oil may pull back towards resistance at $87.70, before falling again to $85.19, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

Further price gains were capped by data showing U.S. crude oil inventories rose slightly last week, according to the American Petroleum Institute. Crude inventories increased by 313,000 barrels in the week to October 19, according to the API, compared with an analyst forecast for an increase of 1.9 million barrels in total.

"Growing oil stocks and weak demand sentiment appear to have offset Middle East tight supply worries, with a threat by Iran to curtail oil exports in response to tighter sanctions," analysts at ANZ said in a report.

AUTOS: VW Joining Compact SUV Fray

Volkswagen has revealed its intention to join the burgeoning compact SUV ranks with the Taigun concept that debuts at the Sao Paulo motor show in Brazil.

The four-seat Taigun previews the look and mechanical layout for a new Volkswagen model to be positioned and priced below the popular Tiguan. The new SUV will be launched toward the middle of the decade as a rival to vehicles such as the Mini Countryman, Nissan Juke and Chevrolet Trax.

By showing the Taigun two years before its planned market introduction, Volkswagen hopes to receive valuable feedback from potential customers. The Taigun is set to provide the basis for a new family of vehicles, including similar-sized offerings from Seat, Skoda and possibly Audi.

The Taigun concept is powered by a 1-liter diesel engine. (Photo: Volkswagen) Although the concept is described as a tribute to the Brazilian market, Ulrich Hackenberg, the head of Volkswagen research and development, confirms the upcoming production version of the new SUV is "not only planned to be sold in South America but around the world."

Taigun is based around a stretched version of Volkswagen's NSF (New Small Family) steel platform used for the Up city car, with exterior styling developed by a team of in-house designers working under Volkswagen brand design boss Klaus Bischoff. It takes on a more rugged and functional form than the Tiguan, with four front-hinged doors and a tailgate that extends well into the rear bumper.

Bischoff describes the new SUV's appearance as "confident, logical and clean." As seen on recent new Volkswagen models, the Taigun is dominated by horizontal design elements, while various details aim to provide visual links to the Tiguan, most notably the taillamps.

At 151.9 inches long, 68 inches wide and 61.8 inches tall, the Taigun is 22.3 inches shorter, 3.2 inches narrower and 5.1 inches lower than the Tiguan. Its 97.2-inch wheelbase and 58-inch track widths are also 7.1 inches shorter and 3.8 inches narrower, respectively, than the Tiguan.

Volkswagen says the Taigun's interior was inspired by smartphone design. (Photo: Volkswagen) Power for the Taigun concept comes from the same turbocharged 1-liter three-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine destined for the upcoming Up GT and other models in 2013. Part of Volkswagen's new EA211 engine family, it uses 3.46-inch bore spacing and an aluminum block to make it both compact and lightweight.

The transversely mounted engine kicks out a claimed 108 horsepower, four more than VW's existing turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine, with peak torque put at 129 pound-feet at 1,500 rpm. Drive is channeled through a six-speed manual gearbox.

The powertrain can propel the 2,172-pound Taigun from 0-to-62-mph in 9.2 seconds and to a top speed of 116 mph, VW says, with estimated fuel economy of 50 mpg.

According to Bischoff, the interior of the Taigun was inspired by the latest smartphones. It has a clean and reduced look that aims for the visual clarity and simplicity of early off-roaders.
A thin, aluminum-look strip forms the basis of the dashboard, housing a plain-looking three-dial instrument binnacle, a trio of additional gauges, integrated color monitor and chunky controls for the air conditioning set within the air vents on the outer edges.
