Pension change 'still negotiable'

Council and public sector workers on strike in Birmingham in March 2006Public sector workers are already facing heavy job cuts and a pay freeze

Public sector pension changes are still open to negotiation, the business secretary has said, amid union threats of the biggest strikes since 1926.

Vince Cable said "reasonable people" could still resolve the dispute.

But unions have reacted angrily over the plans for public sector employees to work longer and pay more for less generous entitlements in retirement.

One teaching union has called for negotiations to start afresh.

Dr Mary Boustead, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said: "What we are afraid of is it will make our pensions so unattractive and so unaffordable that it will push public servants, particularly teachers, nurses and social workers, into pension poverty and living off the state.

"The government has to negotiate properly, and it has to decide whether it is in negotiations, or whether it will simply lay down the law."

She said the talks were not going well and that ministers should withdraw their "diktat" on increasing pension contributions.

She added the ATL was prepared to negotiate everything, including age requirements and moving from final salary to career average.

"We're not going to respond kindly to threats. I am talking about dignity in retirement after years and years of public service, doing difficult and complex jobs.

"We're not asking for anything that is unreasonable, we're asking for dignity."

Teachers' unions in England and Wales have already voted to strike on 30 June to protect their pensions. They will walk out on the same day as PCS union members, who are mainly from the civil service and government agencies.

The strike by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the ATL is expected to disrupt thousands of schools.

Why are public sector workers striking? Q&A: Retirement rules and you Guide to public sector pension schemes

Unison leader Dave Prentis told The Guardian unions were prepared for "sustained and indefinite" strikes.

Its 1.3 million members, who work for local authorities, the NHS, colleges and the police, have not yet been balloted on industrial action.

Mr Prentis said if strikes did happen they would be the biggest since the General Strike of 1926 and, unlike the miners' strike in 1984/5, the unions would win.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said if the government was "determined to push through a huge attack on people's pension entitlement", then the unions would have no option other than to take industrial action.

Gail Cartmail from Unite admitted the next few months looked "grim".

She added: "We're happy to talk, it's just ill-advised by government ministers to negotiate on TV and elsewhere."

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said it would be a "colossal mistake" for public sector workers not to accept the coalition government's plan.

He said the government was proposing public sector workers - bar the armed forces, police and fire service - would receive their occupational pension at the same time as the state pension in future.

Vince Cable

Vince Cable: "Our belief is most trade unions want to negotiate over this"

Many can currently receive a full pension at 60. The state pension age is due to rise to 66 for both men and women by April 2020.

Ministers also want to move the public sector scheme from a final salary system to benefits based on career-average earnings.

Public sector workers are already facing heavy job cuts and a pay freeze.

Mr Cable said: "The government wants to negotiate over this and our belief is that most trade unionists want to negotiate over this as well.

"It's a very big, complex, difficult issue. But there's got to be reform otherwise the burden falls on taxpayers and future generations. We have got to do something about it.

"We are talking about how future pensions are to be paid for. Reasonable people, I think, can agree and negotiate on how we deal with that problem."

Massive Wildfire Grows In East Texas

United States?(Texas) - An army of Texas firefighters is battling a 14,000-acre wildfire Sunday in Trinity and Polk counties that already has destroyed two homes and six trailers and is likely to spread even more, the Texas Forest Service said. The blaze, called the Bearing Fire, ignited shortly after noon Friday in the Davy Crockett National Forest west of Lufkin and was only 20 percent contained by Sunday morning, said Rae Brooks, spokeswoman at the National Forest Service.

No injuries were reported, but voluntary evacuations were called in the communities of Helmic and Nigton and a mandatory evacuation was ordered in Trevat west of FM 2262. A temporary shelter has been set up at Groveton High School.

If the fire jumps FM 2262, firefighters said, mandatory evacuations may impact the community of Apple Springs as well.

"It's one of the largest wildfires in East Texas, ever," Brooks said. The massive blaze trumps the "Chicken Fire" in Nacogdoches County in 2000, which burned 20,000 acres.

As firefighters battled the blaze on the ground, two heavy air tankers and three large helicopters were working it from the air, the Forest Service said. Firefighters from Hudson and Diboll were among the numerous fire departments at the scene.

Almost the entire state was under a red flag warning Sunday because of high temperatures, low humidity and high winds, signaling an extreme risk of fire, Forest Service spokesman Richard Reuse said.

Those elements, he said, could help the blaze to spread.

"That combination can cause a fire to get much larger," Reuse said.

As flying embers are propelled by high winds, "the fire could be spotting a half a mile to a mile ahead of the main body of the fire, so it could be causing spot fires," he said. "In addition, with the extremely high winds, the fire could push forward more rapidly than usual."

The Bearing Fire was generally headed in a northwest direction Sunday, Reuse said.

The state's longstanding drought has fueled some record-breaking fires, according to the Forest Service.

Since Nov. 15, a total of 3,012,879 acres have burned in Texas, exceeding the previous record set in 2006 of 1,976,295 acres, Brooks said.

Two-thirds of Texas counties -- 171 of the state's 254 counties -- have been impacted by wildfires this year.

As of June 17, a total of 496 homes have been lost statewide, and 1,399 "other structures" have been destroyed by fires, Brooks said.

UPDATE 1-Maersk approves $1 bln investment in UK oil field

Fri Jun 17, 2011 9:02am BST

* Maersk Oil approves $1 bln investment in UK oil fields

* Says its share seen at 45 mln barrels of oil equivalent

* Says first oil expected in 2014

(Adds details, quotes, share price)

COPENHAGEN, June 17 (Reuters) - Danish shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) has approved a $1 billion investment in the Golden Eagle Area, one of the largest oil discoveries in the UK North Sea in recent years.

The group's oil division, Maersk Oil said in a statement on Friday that its estimated share of reserves was expected to be around 45 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The company holds a 31.56 percent non-operated interest in the Golden Eagle Area which is operated by Canada's sixth-largest independent oil producer Nexen Inc .

"The approval of the field development plan is an important step towards getting production going in the Golden Eagle Area," said Martin Pedersen, managing director of Maersk Oil UK.

"The area is home to one of the largest discoveries in the UK North Sea in recent years, and we are pleased to be partners in such a promising field development," Pedersen said.

The Golden Eagle Area comprises the Golden Eagle and Peregrine fields operated by Nexen with Maersk Oil, Canada's biggest oil and gas company Suncor Energy Inc , and Edinburgh Oil and Gas as partners.

Subject to partner and regulatory approvals, construction of a platform and other infrastructure would begin in November this year, Maersk Oil said.

The first oil was expected in 2014 with initial production rates at between 60,000-65,000 barrels of oil a day, of which Maersk Oil's share was expected to be 19,000-21,000 barrels per day.

Maersk Oil has exploration and production activities on five continents and produces about 700,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Nexen has estimated the Golden Eagle Area contains 140-150 million barrels of oil equivalent in gross recoverable contingent resources, making it one of the largest oil discoveries in the UK North Sea in recent years.

Shares in A.P. Moller-Maersk traded down 1.2 percent at 0739, against a 0.8 percent fall in the Copenhagen bourse's benchmark index .

First Tee golf program taking second shot in Utah

The young, diverse audience wanted answers on that summer day while visiting Rose Park Golf Course. Unfamiliar with golf, children asked Jack Nicklaus why so many holes were cut into the practice green and why flags of varying colors appeared around the course, among other subjects.

Eight years later, the question is why The First Tee of Salt Lake City?s chapter could not sustain itself after the opening celebration that featured Nicklaus? appearance. Utah eventually became one of only two states not involved with The First Tee, designed to introduce golf and its values to youth ? including those who ordinarily would not be exposed to the game.

Yet as another round of The First Tee commercials air during the U.S. Open, there is hope for the program?s revival locally. Led by former Jazz general manager Tim Howells, a group is working toward the formal creation of The First Tee of Utah. The headquarters would be Golf in the Round, an extensive practice facility with a nine-hole course in South Salt Lake.

?We?re excited about Utah coming back to the network,? said Henry Sandles, the program?s Mountain Region director.

In many respects, Utah is starting over. A short-game practice area at the Jordan River Par 3, adjacent to Rose Park, was professionally designed and built largely through a $100,000 grant from the United States Golf Association.

The facility, now minimally maintained, symbolizes the good intentions of those who tried to make the program work.

?We had a fair number of teenagers that really got into it,? said Leann Saldivar, president/CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake City. ?We always thought The First Tee program had a lot of merit, but it definitely needs legs to carry it forward.?

That means financial backing, mostly. Alan Seko, president of The First Tee of Salt Lake City, cited the ?money issue? as a primary shortcoming. ?We were scraping by,? Seko said. ?Grant money in this town is hard to come by, unless you?ve been around for a few years.?

Story continues below

?If you do certain things that you?re not supposed to do, you get a shot added to your score. You don?t want to do those things.? ? Girl in a promotional spot for The First Tee.

With support from golf bodies and sponsors, The First Tee has capitalized on opportunities to spread its message during tournament telecasts, notably the U.S. Open. The spots illustrate the values the program espouses, extending beyond the mere satisfaction of hitting a golf ball.

That?s what Howells likes about the game and The First Tee, which ?just happened to be something that hit my hot button,? he said.

Howells, 65, is about 11 years removed from a decade of working under longtime friend Larry H. Miller as the Jazz?s general manager. As the chapter?s executive director, Howells has assembled a board led by president Brad Baldwin, who was heavily involved in Utah?s Champions Tour event, last staged in 2002 in Park City.

While trying to attract a founding partner and other corporate support, The First Tee of Utah is planning a kickoff event in late September at The Country Club of Salt Lake City. Howells believes his own ?determination to see it succeed? and the board?s connections and fund-raising ability can make the program thrive with an annual budget approaching $200,000.

So does Sandles, who tried to help salvage the initial attempt and cites the national organization?s improved training and support mechanisms. ?We didn?t have all that in place before,? Sandles said. ?We weren?t in position to help chapters back then as much as we are now.?

In the meantime, programs in Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County partially have filled The First Tee?s void. Chevron shifted its sponsorship to Salt Lake City?s program, offering scholarships to four-day youth clinics. Golf pros Derek Schmehl of Rose Park and Dave Carter of Glendale have reached out to neighboring youth organizations, and the city?s recreation department has modeled The First Tee, using limited-flight balls at parks and playgrounds.

The First Tee of Utah hopes to tie everything together and expand throughout the state. The Utah Section PGA is tied in with the effort, promoting interest and training teachers.

Morocco reform offer 'not enough'

Moroccan King Mohammed VI (June 2010)King Mohammed VI will retain a number of key posts under the proposed reforms
Related Stories

Pro-democracy activists in Morocco have said constitutional reforms proposed by King Mohammed VI do not go far enough.

Members of the February 20 said they would still hold a planned protest on Sunday calling for greater changes to the country's political system.

The proposed reforms include giving the prime minister and parliament more executive authority and recognising the minority Berber language.

But King Mohammed will retain key powers and remains head of the army.

A new article within the constitution also formalised his role as the highest religious authority in the country.

In a television address on Friday, the king said the measures would entrench democratic institutions and protect rights.

The proposals will be put to a referendum on 1 July, but many activists have reacted with scepticism, saying Morocco's 400-year-old monarchy has a long history of enacting superficial reforms.

The youth-based February 20 movement, which has carried out weekly pro-democracy marches around the country, said it would continue to call for "a truly democratic constitution and a parliamentary monarchy".

Analysis

The proposals will be put to a referendum on 1 July.

That is a very swift timetable, which is bound to make the opposition think the king is trying to push through the reforms without proper discussion.

Initial response has been mixed - some welcoming the ideas, others suggesting they are purely cosmetic.

"The plan as proposed by the king yesterday does not respond to our demands for a true separation of powers," said a spokesman in Rabat.

"We will protest peacefully on Sunday against this plan."

Others in Morocco welcomed the king's speech, saying it represented a major advance for the country.

"The kingdom of Morocco has joined the list of democratic countries," said one man out celebrating in Rabat.

"Today as Moroccan youths, we're all celebrating our new constitution from the city of Tangier to the city of Lagouira."

The proposal to officially recognise Berber - or Amazig - as an official language, alongside Arabic, has also been welcomed. The Berbers were Morocco's first inhabitants and make up some 60% of the population, but have complained of widespread discrimination.

Like many countries across the Middle East and North Africa, Morocco has seen a growing call for major reforms to its political system in the past year.

The country has also been facing severe economic challenges with high unemployment and rising levels of poverty.

King Mohammed, 47, acceded to the throne in 1999 following the death of his father, Hassan II, and now heads the Arab world's longest-serving dynasty.

Hackers breach US Senate website (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? A shadowy group of hackers behind a string of recent cyberattacks claimed to have breached the US Senate website and taken internal data.

The Senate Sergeant at Arms, which is responsible for congressional security, confirmed there had been an intrusion into the server hosting the public website, Senate.gov, but said no sensitive information was compromised.

The hacker group, which goes by the name of "Lulz Security," published files online at lulzsecurity.com said to have been swiped from Senate.gov.

"This is a small, just-for-kicks release of some internal data from Senate.gov -- is this an act of war, gentlemen?" Lulz Security said in a statement.

"We don't like the US government very much," the group added. "Their sites aren't very secure."

The Sergeant at Arms said Senate computer security staff had discovered an "unauthorized access" over the weekend into the server hosting Senate.gov.

"The intruder did not gain access into the Senate computer network and was only able to read and determine the directory structure of the files placed on Senate.gov," the Sergeant at Arms said in a statement.

"That server is for public access on the public side of the Senate's network firewall, and any files that individual Senate offices place there are intended for public consumption," it said.

The Sergeant at Arms said the intruders took advantage of a vulnerability in a portion of the website that is maintained by an individual Senate office.

"Although this intrusion is inconvenient, it does not compromise the security of the Senate's network, its members or staff," the Sergeant at Arms said.

"Specifically, there is no individual user account information on the server supporting Senate.gov that could have been compromised," it said.

The Sergeant at Arms said it would be conducting a security review of all of the sites hosted on Senate.gov.

Lulz Security, whose name is derived from the text-messaging shorthand phrase LOL, or "laugh out loud," has claimed credit for a series of cyberattacks in recent weeks.

The targets have included Sony's online operations, an FBI partner website, the website of videogame developer Bethesda Softworks and the website of the US non-profit Public Broadcasting Service.

Friendship before Relationship by Iknay

June 12, 2011
Viewed 66 times.

A relationship without friendship as its foundation is like a castle built on sand.?

I came across this quote a very long time ago. During that time, I wasn't really able to analyze this quote. It seemed to me as just another simile that hopeless romantic people have created.

Now that I have come to my senses, I realized that this specific quote makes perfect sense for people who get into and are currently in a relationship.

A couple who plans to get into a relationship should first be able to distinguish themselves as best friends. They have to be able to open up to each other. They need to have the capacity of total honesty to one another. In the friendship stage, the two people will be able to determine if they really are a perfect match.

The friendship that has been built will be carried over into a relationship. When you compare relationships that have friendship as a foundation, communication will not be a major problem in the relationship. They will be able to relay their thoughts and feelings to their partner with more ease. On the other hand, the relationships that happened too fast will tend to have more communication problems. There will be anxiety between the couple. There will be things they won't know how to tell their partner.

Having a good friendship with your partner is probably one of the most critical parts in having a relationship. It makes things more comfortable for both sides because of the time shared with each other as friends. The time shared as a couple is totally different but also as important.

Take it one step at a time. Have a friendship before having a relationship.

Less Than 60% of Americans Have Jobs

President Obama and his pals might think it?s fun to crack jokes about spending nearly a trillion dollars on stimulus, only to lose 1.9 million jobs, but the employment situation in the United States is no laughing matter. According to CNS News, the number of Americans with jobs is down to 58.4%

The fraction of the population with a job has in fact fallen in the 28 months since Congress passed the stimulus ? down from 60.3 percent in February 2009 to 58.4 percent in May 2011.

The economy cannot create jobs fast enough to keep pace with layoffs and recent high school and college graduates seeking employment. If the trend continues, as Summers notes may happen, the economy will suffer further in the future as college graduates delay entry into the labor force, reducing their lifetime productivity.

?Beyond the lack of jobs and incomes, an economy producing below its potential for a prolonged interval sacrifices its future,? argued Summers. ?Huge numbers of new college graduates are moving back in with their parents this month because they have no job or means of support.?

As both Summers and the BLS data make clear, the economy is not creating new jobs fast enough to make up for layoffs and new graduates, calling into question Obama?s oft-repeated claim that the economy is recovering and creating jobs.

But Obama will continue blaming his predecessor for a systemic problem caused by liberal policies, while pushing for more regulations and bone-headed policies that will make things worse. His only hope at getting re-elected now is tanking the economy to such an extent that more Americans vote to keep their government benefits.

The Most Important Basics Behind FAFSA Grants And Financial Aid ...

You are here: Home / Blog / FAFSA / The Most Important Basics Behind FAFSA Grants And Financial Aid

This article will be taking a look at some of the ins and outs of aFAFSA grant. There are many students in the state of Florida that struggle to pay for a higher education and this type of aid might assist their efforts a great deal.

These grants are intended to pay for every portion of the college experience that a struggling student might not otherwise be able to handle on their own. The most expensive thing they pay out is tuition, this is typically the very first thing that the grant will pay out as well.

Most students quickly discover that college level texts do not come cheap and this is often the second most expensive part of each term. It is true that occasionally a student will come across an instructor that only requires a $20-30 text book. It is far most common to come across instructors that require the $180-300 text book however. Sometimes an expensive CDROM must also be purchased.

There are some students that might have to actually live near the campus in their own apartment or dormitory and in some cases the aid will pay for boarding as well. Living at home is preferred by most since residential costs are often so high.

A lot of the initial charges such as tuition, books and boarding will be made to a special financial aid account that only the school has access to. What is left over (if anything) is mailed out to the student in the form of a paper check or loading on to a check card.

The FAFSA program is a really good option for students in the state of Florida that have trouble funding their higher education. Even if somebody is not approved for a full amount grant, they might just be eligible for a partial one. It never hurts to apply however.

Aspiring college students, have a quick look at our article on FAFSA grants for the low down on the FAFSA verification process and the benefits of student financial aid at http://www.easyaid.com/fafsa-verification.html now!

Libyan assets in Africa far-reaching, little known - seattlepi.com

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) ? Fancy hotels that dominate the skylines of several African capitals, farms, banks, gas stations, telephone companies and an international airline ? the financial tentacles of Moammar Gadhafi's regime are far-reaching and little known across the continent.

They include the first pan-African communications satellite and the continent's only pan-African radio station.

And while a few countries say they have frozen those assets, in line with U.N. sanctions, many suspect that hundreds of millions of dollars are under the radar and could simply vanish in the disarray surrounding the Libyan revolution.

"We have billions and billions, who knows how many billions?" the deputy governor of the rebel-held Central Bank in Benghazi, Abdalgader Albagrmi, told The Associated Press.

With Libya at war, and despite the international sanctions, the West African nation of Niger announced last month that it had signed an agreement for LAP Green Network to pay $66 million for a 51 percent share in a 10-year license for the state telecommunications and mobile companies. LAP is an acronym for the Libyan African Investment Portfolio which is among companies hit by U.N. sanctions.

Just one complex of luxury, high-rise apartment buildings in Cairo swallowed billions of Libyan assets, according to Mahmoud Badi, who used to manage financial and administrative monitoring of the governing General People's Committee, including foreign investments.

"One can estimate the total foreign investments exceed $150 billion or $170 billion, if it's not even more than that," said Badi. He emphasized that he was responsible for auditing government expenditure and investments only from 1994 to 1997, but said he has closely followed the ballooning investments by keeping contact with those who followed him in the job.

Badi said the many companies created to handle investments, and their name changes, make tracing them more difficult. He reeled off a dizzyingly long list: Libyan Investment Co., Libyan African Investment Co., Libyan Investment Corp., Libyan Oil Investment Co. In the banking sector he said there is the Libyan Investment Bank, the Libyan African Bank, the Arab Bank Corp., Arab Foreign Bank, British-Arab Commercial Bank, Arab Bank for Investment and Foreign Trade, in partnership with the Algerian and Emirates governments, and Sahara Bank jointly owned with the French PARIBAS.

"In addition, and this is not a secret, there are a lot of (bank) accounts and under a lot of names of responsible persons. It's very easy, with the Internet, to move money from account to account, one name to another. Some are in secret accounts in banks that are not willing to show these investments if they are not forced to," Badi said, adding this may make it impossible to recover some funds.

He said he was certain the money frozen by the United States and European nations ? in excess of $60 billion ? is "in safe hands." But for the rest ? he threw up his hands to display his skepticism.

At least three African countries have acted swiftly to take control of assets jointly owned with Libya.

Rwanda, Zambia and Uganda took control of their countries biggest telecommunications companies. Rwanda said the Libyans long had failed to meet contractual commitments. Zambia said it was freezing Libyan shares until the civil war is resolved.

Libyan companies in Uganda valued at $375 million, including pharmaceutical and cookie factories, employ more than 3,000 people. Some said they were panicking about their future despite government's assurances that the companies are doing well.

Hundreds of hotel workers have been laid off in Gambia since that West African nation froze Libyan assets in two hotels. "Closed until further notice," says a sign outside the country's only amusement park at the LAICO Hotel and Dream Park.

A travel agent who answered the London telephone number advertised on the Web site of Afriqiyah Airways said the airline no longer is operating. Gadhafi started Afriqiyah boasting it would ease travel on the continent, from which it sometimes is faster to fly to Europe to reach another part of Africa.

Also hanging in limbo is the future of the only continentwide radio station, Africa No. 1, which has been broadcasting from Libreville, Gabon, since the 1970s and reaches some 20 million listeners in a score of countries via satellite and shortwave. Its satellite provider cut its signal last month saying it was owed some 300,000 euros. Libya owns 52 percent of the station.

Libya's civil war also casts a cloud over a project to build an oil pipeline from Uganda to Kenya, in which Libya owns 51 percent and the Ugandan and Kenyan governments share 49 percent.

"The Libyans are in Kenya in a big way," said opposition legislator Gitobu Imanyara, whose country is dotted with LibyaOil gas stations. He said questions in parliament about whether the government is freezing Libyan assets have received no clear answers.

In South Africa, the government says it still is compiling a list of Libyan assets, which include shares in the prestigious Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton.

Legacy Group chairman Bart Dorrestein said they have frozen Libyan dividend payments from the Michelangelo but refused to say what they were worth.

"It's not an oil well. It's a hotel," he complained.

The giant-size portrait of Gadhafi has been removed from the resplendent lobby of the five-star l'Amitie (friendship) Hotel where heads of state are put up in Bamako, Mali. But otherwise business continues as usual there and at numerous other Libyan government assets including gas stations, oil exploration, the controversial lease of 250,000 acres of prime agricultural land on the Niger delta, and numerous Madrases Moslem schools and mosques.

One huge Libyan-funded mosque was built, intentionally it seems, right next door to the U.S. Embassy in Bamako.

Mali's Foreign Ministry said there are no plans to freeze the Libyan assets. "There are no doubt some cash accounts here too," the ministry said in a statement. "It is possible that the Libyan government could attempt to sell properties that it owns here. This would be difficult to trace."

In Central African Republic, Gadhafi sent troops to support a government confronting coup attempts and an insurgency in 2001. In return, Libya won a 99-year agreement to explore all its mineral deposits, including diamonds and gold. Those exploration rights ran roughshod over agreements previously made with France, the nation that was at the forefront of imposing a U.N.-regulated no-fly zone over Libya. It's unclear how Libya pursued its agreement in that country.

Badi said most investments appear to be sound, moneymaking ventures.

Not in that category is RASCOM, Africa's communications satellite conceived to end the continent's dependence on expensive European-owned satellites and to bring affordable Internet and telephone services to remote areas. Gadhafi put up $300 million and two African development banks $200 million for the project.

RASCOM now offers broadband services and plans on transmitting radio and television broadcasts in addition to Internet services for long-distance medical and educational needs.

In a sign of how little is known of other investments, the rebel Central Bank's Albagrmi said they found out about Libyan investments in three luxury hotels in Cairo and Sharm-el-Sheikh resort from Egyptian "friends of the revolution."

He said the rebel administration would be contacting the Egyptian government to try to ensure no money from the hotels reaches the pockets of Gadhafi and his clique.

Setting up Retail Merchant Accounts | SHM News

Some business owners are satisfied with making a certain amount of income and have no wish or plan to grow their business with a retail credit card processing. Others, however, aggressively pursue professional opportunities for expansion by seeking out technological advances that can help them better serve customer needs while increasing profits. A retail merchant account will elevate you to the next level of business development by providing access to sophisticated methods that can impress clients and outdistance the competition.

Reasons for opening a retail merchant account are many and varied. Here are some of the more prevalent:

1. A retail merchant account can equip you with key equipment that will make your job easier and more efficient. For example, you can have a credit card processor installed, sometimes at no cost, and pay just a few cents for each customer transaction. Or you can arrange a deal whereby you pay a small percentage of all credit card transactions your company accepts. For a minimal fee you may soon be able to multiply profits while reducing costs typically associated with hiring employees to manage cash purchases.

2. A retail merchant account can make doing business with your company easier and more convenient. Customers won?t have to worry about stopping by the bank or writing a check to get cash before visiting your establishment, nor will they have to pay ATM fees to withdraw cash. They can simply pull out a credit card with confidence, knowing that you can quickly process payment without the hassle of making change or opening a check-cashing account.

3. A retail merchant account can put you ahead of others in your area who conduct similar business but who do not yet have a merchant account or its accompanying advantages. If customers have to choose between two companies for shopping or service, they are more likely to choose the one that provides credit card processing as a payment option, along with other professional services that build trust in the company?s vision.

4. A retail merchant account can offer the first step toward leading your business into the future. After implementing a credit card processor, for example, you may later decide to offer wireless processing options, which will provide your customers with even more options for doing business with your company without the need for staff to manage every telephone call, order, or payment. You can cut operating costs and increase profit margins when you expand your business to include customer-friendly automated technology.

Don?t be the last in your industry to jump on board the technological bandwagon. Start checking the various programs that are available to help you improve the services you can offer customers to keep them coming back with repeat business. Compare options to get the best services for your customer?s needs. Negotiate for the lowest costs and most effective terms. You might even want to conduct an informal customer survey to learn about the types of upgrades they want to see happen in your company. Then shop for the best deal in your new retail merchant account.

Apple brings deep Twitter integration to iOS

Apple's just announced that it's bringing deep Twitter integration to all of its iOS-based devices, and to many of its own apps, including Camera, Photos, Safari and Maps. That integration also, of course, extends to Contacts, where you'll be able to link your contacts to their Twitter handle and keep their information updated accordingly, much like Android. You'll also only have to sign into Twitter once (in Settings), and then simply share those credentials with any app that requests them.

Critics' Choice Television Awards: Yet Another Awards Show Arrives to Fete TV

If you?re thinking that what the world needs now is another awards show, then perhaps you?re a member of the newly formed Broadcast Television Journalists Association, which whipped itself together recently and decided to hold an awards show this month to get a jump on a slightly bigger gathering called the Emmys.

The Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) is an off-shoot of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and centers mostly on ?those who regularly cover television for TV viewers,? meaning these are people you see on TV fawning over ? or maybe that?s called covering ? people who are on television series. People covering television shows on television don?t seem to do much serious criticism, but the group did decide to add some people who cover television online and, in a nice coup, also got respected critic Matt Roush from TV Guide Magazine.

The new group?s nominees, announced today, show some progressively clever improvements over traditional Emmy nominees but also a few stupefying decisions and omissions.

The group has 10 nominees in both the best drama and best comedy category, something the Emmys should seriously consider. There are six nominees in the acting categories, three reality categories (series, competition, host) a ?talk show? category that includes daytime entrees, no writing or directing categories and no movies, miniseries, specials or documentaries.

So at least it should be a lot shorter than the Emmys.

The 10 best drama nominees are Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Fringe, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, Justified, The Killing, Mad Men and The Walking Dead. That?s a pretty strong list if you?re nominating 10 and, despite the egregious omission of Treme, plus the worthy trio of Men Of A Certain Age, Lights Outand Southland, there?s not much to quibble with.

The 10 best comedy nominees are Archer, The Big Bang Theory, Community, Glee, Louie, The Middle, Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Recreationand 30 Rock. Scratch Glee?and The Office?and you?d have room for? It?s Always Sunny In Philadelphia?and Raising Hope,?two far better choices (Emmy voters, pay close attention to that). But at least the Archer?nomination was inspired (and deserved).

In the ?talk show? category, the only late night network talk show nominee is Jimmy Kimmel Live (which we endorse, wholeheartedly), though Chelsea Lately gets a nod. Both Oprah and Ellen get included for daytime.

Inspired picks elsewhere that Emmy voters should monitor include Walton Goggins (Justified) and Shawn Hatosy (Southland) for best supporting actor; Margo Martindale (Justified) for best supporting actress; Charlie Day for lead comedy actor on Sunny; Nick Offerman for supporting comedy actor on Parks and Eden Sher for supporing actress on The Middle.

Of course, award nominations (and winners) are meant to bickered about, but we?re going to save most of our applause and bile for the Emmys, which is a show most people are more likely to watch. These so-called Critics Choice Television Awards (rowr!) will be held June 20 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, streamed live on VH1.com and then shown on the Reelz Channel on June 22 at 8 p.m. (repeated at 11 p.m.).

The Television Critics Association, made up of print critics from newspapers, magazines and online sites, also has an awards show every July, but wisely keeps it off the air. If only several others followed our lead.

'Avatar' Producer Jon Landau Calls on Apple, China to Embrace 3D

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images

SINGAPORE ? Avatar producer Jon Landau is calling for grading of converted ?fake? 3D and truth in advertising to weed out cheats -- get ready for 2.4D and 2.8D. And Steve Jobs might want start banging out the next generation of iPad 3D.

Attending the inaugural edition of ScreenSingapore to speak at a 3D seminar, Landau told The Hollywood Reporter that even for the converted Titanic slated in 2012, the best he and director James Cameron can do is 2.8D.

?Like colorization, it?s never true color; a conversion will never be true 3D. You don?t have all of that information. So you?re cheating. How good can you fake it? The more time you have, the better it can be. [For Titanic in 3D,] we?re creating an illusion of 3D to begin with, so if we can create something by spending a year converting it, and ending up with this 2.8D, the difference might be imperceptible to the movie going audience. If we rush to do it, while we try to finish up all the rest of post-production, then we might end up with 2.4D, and that?s not going to look good," he said.

After Titanic, the next in line for a 3D makeover would be Terminator 2, says Landau. But with Titanic and?Avatar 2 & 3, where Jake and Neytiri explore new parts and see new creatures of Pandora, liquid metal squishing in 3D is still years away. On the technological side, apart from the higher frame rates, the producer and his partner Cameron are looking into ways to bring 3D gaming into the home, and increasing the efficiency of their virtual production for the upcoming Avatar films by creating more lighting tools and working with companies such as Autodesk and Weta Digital.

As for inferior converted 3D products that flood the market place, Landau says they should be made to label themselves as such.

?Now you see advertising that says RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, maybe you just say, ?converted to 3D.' We?re not going to shy away from it with Titanic. We spend the time to do it right. You?ve got to be honest with your consumers.?

In the long run though, Landau believes inferior products converted from 2D would eventually disappear. ?Audiences are smarter than studios give them credit for, and they know when a movie is done properly with 3D, and they?ll seek them out. We live in a day and age where information disseminate so quickly, thanks to Twitter and Facebook, if a movie opens on Friday night and the 3D is not good, people will know it by Friday night,? he notes.

?There are no good movies with bad 3D. There are just bad movies with bad 3D. It?s like focus. You don?t see out of focus movies.?You?re not going to see bad 3D. If something is out of focus, you?re squinting, it?s hurting your eyes. All you have to do is to focus it. It?s the same thing with 3D,? Landau adds.

Landau stresses that 3D for film is equivalent to the introduction of color film stock, and black and white television being phased out by color television sets. And Steve Jobs might also want to take note. ?All of our screens would be in 3D. For computers, Macintosh is a poor man?s version of 3D. You have a window here, another program there, and you click through them. Why not make it into a real 3D space? You could reach in and you can pull this or that one forward. That?s going to happen. It?s only natural.?

?People in the future are going to demand their content in 3D. Unless you create it now, you?d have to convert it later. Right now we don?t have the distribution network to get 3D into the home, but it?s starting to happen. But if a network starts doing it, for example, Desperate Housewives in 3D, that?s going to take hold.

Landau thinks that the arrival of iPad 3D is not a matter of if, but when. ?It?s a single viewer experience. 3D without glasses is best for the single viewer. In all the things that we love that are moving around on our iPads now, it could be all that much engaging. It goes back to advertising, to put you there longer. 3D does that, because it engages you.?

All contents would sooner or later be in 3D, Landau says. ?European sports are all shifting to 3D. Soccer, racing, even cricket. What 3D does for live events is to make the audience feels as if you were there. As traveling becomes more expensive, and parts of the world more dangerous, you don?t have to do that. 3D is going to give you the same sense of being there.?

Coming in to pass on his pioneer experience in 3D to Asia, Landau has advice for China to develop a healthy 3D filmmaking environment.?China can encourage young Chinese filmmakers to work in 3D and introduce more 3D Hollywood products into the country.

"What works would be an open door policy to invite American companies that have the 3D technologies now, to come over and be a part of the educational process, and opening of more 3D content not from China to come into China, but to create an opportunity for Chinese filmmakers to see more of these movies and make judgments of what is and is not working in 3D. Only from experiencing can they tell,? Landau says.
