?Nobody wanted him except SMU and North Texas,? said Tim Kraft, Kelly?s father. ?He was a good junior player, but not a great player.?

?Obviously, he played better than me,? Cantlay said. ?But I feel like I threw away the tournament.?

Cantlay fought back from 4 down on the first 18 to take a 1-up lead with four holes to play.

?I made back-to-back-to-back-to-back mistakes,? Cantlay said.

His worst was at the 15th?tee, a ferocious little par 4 at just 252 yards. Cantlay hit an 8-iron off the tee and pull-hooked the shot?into a fairway bunker.?He blasted his approach over the green into deep fescue on a hill and made bogey to lose the hole.

At the 16th, Cantlay three-putted from 15 feet, hammering his birdie putt 8 feet past to lose that hole. Kraft went 1 up with a par there and never gave up the lead in a 2-up victory.

?He made some mistakes,? Kraft said. ?When you?re playing something this big, you might be nervous sometimes. There?s a little more pressure out there.?

Kraft is the third SMU player to win the U.S. Amateur in the last 14 years. He joins Colt Knost (2007) and Hank Kuehne (1998) as the school?s U.S. Am champs. They all played under coach Jay Loar, who was fired?at the end of this past season.

Tim Kraft, Kelly?s father, got choked up talking about Loar, who?flew in to watch Sunday?s final. Eight of Kelly?s SMU teammates were there, too, hooting and hollering for 36 holes.

?I can?t tell you how much those SMU coaches meant to us,? Kraft?s father said. ?Going to SMU changed Kelly?s life. He really grew up there as a player and a person.?

Loar was beaming after.

?I remember Kelly coming into my office for the first time on a recruiting trip,? Loar said. ?He was a very sensitive kid. Watching him grow up mentally and emotionally, watching him gain confidence, it?s been gratifying. He?s become a really cool customer.?

Kraft wasn?t among the top 30 collegians in the Golfweek rankings at season?s end, but he won the Trans-Miss and Texas amateur championships this summer. His peers took notice.

Pat O?Brien, Kraft?s swing coach, said his player?s ability to learn to be comfortable under pressure led to his victories.

?Kelly was good at getting into contention, but the difference this summer is how he learned to slow things down when he did get into contention,? O?Brien said. ?Today, Kelly never got rattled all day. He looked so calm all day.?

Well, until he had the Havemeyer Trophy in his hands and joked that all the excitement just about gave him a heart attack.

"Granted there's not as many people here and it's not exactly the same demographic as last week but I think the plan that the (49ers) demonstrated and what they're doing and the commitment they've shown to it is exemplary and I think it will carry forward throughout the entire season and create a safe environment for the fans here at Candlestick Park," Miller said.

Two men were shot in a parking lot outside the stadium following San Francisco's 17-3 win over the rival Raiders on Aug. 20. There were also numerous fights inside the stadium, including one man getting beaten unconscious in a bathroom.

The violence prompted the 49ers to ban tailgating once the game starts. They also said they would have additional police at games and postgame DUI checkpoints

Miller called the violence "unsettling," and something the NFL is taking seriously and plans to "change."

"Preseason games across the league generally don't have the same fan base that attends the games throughout the season," Miller said. "I really think a lot of the people who were here last weekend were not the true 49ers fans, they weren't the true Raiders fans. They were people who chose that evening event as their own crime scene, this location as their crime scene. They came here with the intent of maybe drinking a lot and getting involved in things they shouldn't have."

Meanwhile, San Francisco police spokesman Albie Esparza said drunken outbursts and violent incidents were "way below" average at Saturday's game, a 30-7 Houston victory.

At the end of the night, there was one arrest, 12 people ejected, and two people cited for public intoxication. That was down significantly from Aug. 20, when more than 70 fans were ejected, 12 people were arrested and dozens of medical calls were made.

Esparza credited visible police presence on foot, bike and motorcycles and the DUI checkpoints at the park's exits.

Officers in patrol cars and on motorcycle and bikes asked tailgaters to go into the stadium after kickoff in accordance with the new rules. Once inside, a large sign above the first tier of seats that was put up following the violence encouraged fans to text a five-digit number to report "unruly behavior."

Fans said this week's matchup was a whole different ball game, so to speak.

Alex Enriquez, 24, of Santa Rosa chalked up some of the violence at last week's game to the charged atmosphere that the rivalry between the team and the cross-town Oakland Raiders generates.

"Raiders-Niners games are for adults," Enriquez said as he barbecued in a Candlestick Park parking lot with his two kids before the game against the Texans. "People come for the controversy."

Other tailgaters shared Enriquez's sentiment though some said they welcomed the team's additional security measures.

Cecilia Apostol, who attended the Aug. 20 game, said she was concerned about her safety and called the 49ers afterward to inquire about security.

"Once in a while you see fights, but last week was worse," Apostol said. She was with her daughter, son-in law and 12- and 5-year-old grandchildren tailgating in the parking lot.

Apostol bought a prepaid parking pass for Saturday's game to be closer to the stadium, where she said she thought she would be safer.

Police planned an increase of staffing by 10 percent at Saturday's game, with additional plainclothes and uniformed officers, Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

The additional staffing was praised by 49ers defensive tackle Ray McDonald.

"That's good of the city to get more police in here to make sure it is organized, and there's not a whole lot of crime," McDonald said. "You have little kids and family here. They just want to come and enjoy the game. They don't want to see anybody get in any fights or get shot."

AFFOLTERN IM EMMENTAL, Switzerland (AP) ? The Emmental Show Dairy has cranked out tons of cheese for years. But now it's in trouble ? production is down by a third and the company fears it may be forced to cut back to just a few wheels a day, enough to show tourists.

The dramatic slide in sales of Emmental, popularly known as "Swiss cheese" in North America, is caused by the strength of the Swiss franc, a financial phenomenon that is driving down profits in sectors across all of export-driven Switzerland.

Adrian Zehnder, the dairy's business manager, says the company is earning 5.49 Swiss francs ($6.92) per kilo, down from 7.80 francs per kilo last year. Most of the cheese is exported to Europe, mainly Italy.

"We are really coming close to our break-even point, which is around 5.30 francs. Then we really have to think about stopping our production," Zehnder said, on the rolling green hills in central Switzerland where cows graze within view of the snow-flecked Bernese Alps.

Swiss government officials are well aware of the problems that exporters like Zehnder's dairy are facing.

The country's currency is used by international investors as a safe haven in times of trouble. When global stock markets are volatile and vulnerable, as they have been lately, traders like to park their capital in Swiss money accounts.

On top of that, the Swiss economy has been doing better than many nations in Europe, where the debt crisis has shaken the financial sector and forced governments to cut spending.

As a result, the Swiss franc rallied from buying 76 euro cents in April to 97 euro cents in early August. On Thursday, it traded at 87 euro cents. Against the dollar, it rose from $1.02 at the start of the year to buy as much as $1.39 this summer.

"It's kind of a paradox. We have a situation where we are suffering because the Swiss economy is strong," government spokesman Andre Simonazzi said.

He declined, however, to consider the possibility that the franc could cause a contraction in Switzerland's economy. "We are not making plans and talking of recession."

The export-reliant economy is still chugging away at a healthy 2.4 percent growth rate. It exported 16.6 billion francs ($20.9 billion) worth of goods in July, up 3 percent on the month.

But the inexorable rise in the franc threatens to reverse the country's economic fortunes. Because of "the flight of the franc" hitting exports, the Swiss government says it now expects a slowdown in the nation's growth to 2.1 percent for 2011, and to 1.5 percent in 2012.

UniCredit Bank AG economist Alexander Koch wrote in a report that there's "already a probability of around 50 percent for a recession at the end of this year."

None of a series of recent measures by the Swiss National Bank and the country's governing Federal Council has put a dent in the franc's value. The government plans to inject $2 billion francs into the economy, which would have the effect of diluting the value of the franc.

But Koch said that is not nearly enough. Meanwhile, negative news from the eurozone debt crisis can drive the franc up any time.

"We therefore believe that an at least drastic slowdown of the Swiss economy is in the cards," he wrote. "Switzerland is on the brink of recession."

European neighbors ? struggling with massive national debts that have eroded confidence in their ability to repay their government debt ? are seeing a slide in consumer spending. Italians and Spaniards are buying less Swiss cheese and chocolate as public sector salaries are trimmed and pension pots shrunk.

Zehnder said cheese makers usually try to boost production to keep their income up when prices fall. But that's led to a glut of Emmental on the market these days, adding to the downward price pressure.

He would rather see the exchange rate fixed between the muscular franc and the battered euro ? a move that is increasingly gaining favor among policymakers.

"We will not shut down our company," he said of the 100-employee cheese-producing dairy, restaurant and store. "We would run the tourist and restaurant parts, but definitely we would think about dropping the production to zero, and we would go for three or four wheels a day, just for tourist purposes, and show the guests how Emmental used to be made."
