21 Ads That Were Banned From Past Super Bowls - Business Insider

PETA's banned "Veggie Love" ad.

Just because an advertiser wants to shell out $4 million for a 30-second Super Bowl commercial doesn't mean they'll get to play in the big game.

From sexy Go Daddy ads and video game spots that tell people to "Go to Hell," to Bud Light spots that make a lot of fart jokes, networks have turned down a lot of major advertisers' content. In fact, Go Daddy got 13 ads rejected in 2006 alone.

But a "banned ad" that doesn't get past a netwrok's Standards & Practices Department sometimes does wonders for a company's buzz.

"I remember one year when the networks wouldn't allow one of the Bud Light spots in the game, so Bud actually released it online as, 'the Super Bowl ad the networks wouldn't let you see,'" Tanin Blumberg, an account director at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and Budweiser Super Bowl ad veteran, told BI.?"It was pretty smart ? got about 1 million views on YouTube in just a few days."

So, given that networks often won't publicly comment on whether an ad is rejected and why, advertisers with no intention of actually releasing a Super Bowl ad just send out press releases saying that their ads were rejected, for publicity.

For example, gay dating site Man Crunch said its ad was rejected in 2010 because it dealt with homo and not heterosexual dating, when it really didn't even make it past CBS' credit check.

We've collected the biggest "banned" ads from the last 10 Super Bowls.

Movie Review: 'Warm Bodies' an Awesome Zombie Valentine ...

No, it's not an ode to necrophilia. It is a charming and whimsical movie that goes deeper than anyone would expect about connectedness, trust and a willingness to change.?

I never thought I'd say "this zombie flick is a great date movie," but now I have. As a matter of warning, it should be rated "Z" for brain-eating zombies. Still, a large cross-section of movie lovers will enjoy it, making it a far better choice?February 14th?than that new Diehard (coming out that day! Wah?),?for everyone from girlfriends hanging out and Twihards, to couples who don't mind a bit of edge in their flicks.?

Playing at AMC Hoffman Center 22.?

To all those who have heard or bought into the press about it being a wannabe Twilight clone, I say yes, the Twihards will appreciate it. But it will be even more appreciated by all of us who grew tired of Twilight's whining and negativity (however much it was dressed in sparkle), and those of us who wanted to scream at that mopey sad-sack Edward to suck it up and get an afterlife.

Warm Bodies plays fast and loose with zombie rules

Here, in this movie, the undead are anything but resigned to their plight. ? Warm Bodies has an optimism, unabashed romanticism and earnestness that is perfect for a holiday about love.?It might be too much for the most cynical filmgoers, even with the dried blood and rotting body bits with which it's smeared. ?

Stay far away if you only like your zombies terrifying and the stuff of nightmares. Stay away as well if you are a stickler for the rules of zombie-ism, as you will find Warm Bodies plays a little too fast and loose with those rules.? As yet another mash-up, this time of zombies and coming-of-age romcoms (a "zomcom," if you will) Cinema Siren does believe it adds something worthwhile to both genres.?

The story is about R, a zombie who lets us into his conflicted, less-dead-than-we-think brain, as he trudges with the rest of the rotting pack. He takes a Cupid's bullet to the heart when he sees gun-toting Julie, out with her med-foraging friends, about to become the next zombie Happy Meal. He rescues her and whisks her away to the nick-nack-filled jet airplane this nostalgic zombie packrat calls home, where they share a few sweetly awkward days and nights getting to know each other.?

Actor Nicholas Hoult, as 'R,' is the star

Love spreads like a scarlet pillow? The rest of the movie is them against the world, which includes Julie's protective dad (the underused John Malkovitch), a post-apocalyptic general with a quick trigger finger for all things undead. ?

Aussie ingenue Teresa Palmer, who forever strains against the label of the "blonde Kristen Stewart," does well enough as Julie, the love interest for an undead 20-something who finds he feels more and more alive when she is near.?

R is the star. Actor Nicholas Hoult (About A Boy, X-Men: First Class) is the one who must carry the film on his slumped and shambling frame. He plays a character who feels isolated, misunderstood and trapped inside a shell that belies his inner sweetness.?

Director enhances novel on the big screen

It's probably hard to make friends and make time when you smell like death, speak in grunts and eat human flesh to survive. He works his way through a wide range of emotions, in scenes that require him to play both broadly and with subtlety in quick succession. ?With natural talent, expanding skill and now adult and undeniable good looks, Hoult will catapult himself into position as an "A" actor with his pick of constantly revolving projects. ?

Rob Coddry's "M," R's "BZF," allows the actor to bring his great character acting and perfect timing to the proceedings, and gets big laughs that mean his memorable role might quickly become a fan favorite. He makes impressive use of scant screen time, further perking up the auds with his every arrival.

Director and screenplay writer Jonathan Levine (who made the surprisingly successful cancer dramedy 50/50) makes the depth of the original novel, written by Isaac Marion, translate very well to the screen, keeping and sometimes even enhancing the metaphoric lessons both great and small, which range from tackling racism and bigotry, to youth alienation, to cocooning and isolation in the computer age.?

There is also a literary reference you might already have heard about or figured out that is far more meaningful if you know well the original from which it takes inspiration.

Soundtracks builds emotional atmosphere

The soundtrack proves to be a mix of clever and poignant. Levine allows the music, some of which is made up of cheesy '80s hits you'll never hear the same way again, to be an integral part of the scene. It builds an emotional atmosphere and adds a component that connects with the audience during the extended times where voiceover narration and slowly shuffling zombies might call a screeching halt to the movie's forward movement. The best soundtracks do that.

To be sure, the end of the movie arrives in a swell of sweet that might as well have us all singing Todd Rundgren's "Love Is The Answer," but that's what romcoms do. The difference is this is a zomcom. Either you can abide this funky freaky little film, with its conceits and exposed beating heart or you can't.

I can, and I absolutely loved it. You might find you do, too. One thing's for sure, your significant other is probably not going to be willing to sit through The Walking Dead on Valentine's Day. With Warm Bodies, you get zombies and love, all tied up in a big bloody-caked bow. Make it a Valentine's Day present to yourself. ?

Sharp manages an operating profit in Q3, but forecast remains cloudy

Sharp manages an operating profit in Q3, but forecast remains cloudy

It's been a while since we had any good financial news for Sharp, so we'll start there. On an operating basis, Reuters and Nikkei report it managed to turn a profit for the October to December quarter of 2.6 billion yen ($28.5 million) -- more than analysts had predicted -- despite still recording a net loss of $398 million. That's not so bad when you consider the massive losses of a year ago, although questions raised last fall about the company's viability still remain. We'll see if a slew of new devices and partnership with Qualcomm are what the doctor ordered -- hopefully the #1 manufacturer of 60-inch and above HDTVs in 2012 can continue on long enough to put its 8K Super Hi-Vision TV in our living rooms.

Obama a skeet shooter? See new White House photo

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two days before President Barack Obama's first trip outside Washington to promote his gun-control proposals, the White House tried to settle a brewing mystery when it released a photo to back his claim to be a skeet shooter.

Obama had set inquiring minds spinning when, in an interview with The New Republic magazine, he answered "yes" when asked if he had ever fired a gun. The admission came as a surprise to many.

"Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time," Obama said in the interview released last weekend, referring to the official presidential retreat in rural Maryland, which he last visited in October while campaigning for re-election. Asked whether the entire family participates, the president said: "Not the girls, but oftentimes guests of mine go up there."

Few could recall Obama ever talking about firing a gun or going skeet shooting "all the time."

The official White House photo released Saturday is dated Aug. 4, 2012. The caption says Obama is shooting clay targets on the range at Camp David. Obama is seen holding a gun against his left shoulder, his left index finger on the trigger and smoke coming from the barrel. He is wearing jeans, a dark blue, short-sleeved polo shirt, sunglasses and headphones.

Asked at Monday's press briefing how frequently Obama shoots skeet and whether photos of the outings existed, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he didn't know how often. Pictures may exist, he said, but he hadn't seen any.

"Why haven't we heard about it before?" Carney was asked.

"Because when he goes to Camp David, he goes to spend time with his family and friends and relax, not to produce photographs," Carney said.

Obama is accompanied almost everywhere by at least one White House photographer.

Carney did not immediately respond Saturday when asked to comment on the decision to release the photo. But it could be part of an effort to portray Obama as sympathetic to gun owners and opponents of his gun-control measures who argue the proposals would infringe on an individual's Second Amendment right to bear arms.

In the interview, which appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic, Obama said gun-control advocates should be better listeners in this latest debate over firearms in the U.S. He also declared his deep respect for the tradition of hunting in this country, which dates back generations.

"I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations," Obama said. "And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas. And if you grew up and your dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were 10, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles, and that became part of your family's traditions, you can see why you'd be pretty protective of that."

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," Obama said.

His gun control measures, which include a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, as well as universal background checks for anyone who wants to buy a firearm, have met some resistance on Capitol Hill and from opponents of tighter restrictions on access to guns, including the powerful National Rifle Association.

In Minneapolis on Monday, Obama plans to make remarks as well as discuss his proposals with local and law enforcement officials during a stop at the police department's special operations center. He's also expected to visit with community members to hear about their experiences with gun violence, the White House said.

Obama announced his proposals in mid-January, about a month after the Dec. 14 shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

Report: Missing NYC mom found dead in Turkey

A New York City mom who went missing while visiting Turkey was found dead Saturday, according to the Turkish state-run news agency.?

The Anadolu Agency reported that residents discovered a woman?s body near ancient city walls of the Fatih district, a historic and working-class area in Istanbul. Police identified the body as that of Sarai Sierra, a mother of two from Staten Island.

The private news broadcaster NTV reported that she had been stabbed to death, and that police had identified her by her driver?s license, according to The Associated Press, although another news agency said it appeared she had died of a blow to the head.

Sierra had not been in contact with her family since Jan. 21, the day before she was supposed to fly home after a two-week vacation. She left for Turkey on Jan. 7 ? alone, because a friend had dropped out of the trip. She wanted to pursue her photography hobby. An Instagram account she set up over the summer, with images of scenes around New York City, had developed a strong following. ?

During her two-week trip abroad, Sierra also visited the Netherlands and Munich, Germany, according to the AP.

At least nine people were detained at the crime scene, police sources told Hurriyet Daily News in Turkey. Two of those detained were women, the AP reported.

Sierra?s family remained hopeful that she was alive because her telephone was twice activated after she disappeared, according to Hurriyet.

Police briefly detained a man last week who exchanged messages with Sierra online. The man had contacted her and made plans to meet with her on a bridge she wanted to photograph, according to Hurriyet. The bridge was a short distance from where Sierra's body was found.

The man was released after being questioned. It was unclear whether he was among the 10 arrested after the body was found.

Sierra?s husband, Steven Sierra, said she stayed in close touch with him and their children, ages 9 and 11, by phone and by Skype. After she didn?t arrive at the airport as planned, Steven Sierra and his brother-in-law David Jimenez booked one-way tickets to Turkey to look for her.?
