Greek police recovered a 17th century painting by Flemish master Pieter Paul Rubens stolen from a museum in Belgium a decade ago, authorities said Thursday.

Two people, both Greeks, were arrested in the operation, he said. Neither the police nor the Culture Ministry would give further information on the raid, the painting or which Belgian museum it was stolen from, saying investigations were still ongoing into the case.

The artwork, dating from 1618 and stolen in 2001, was "a particularly important painting," the ministry said. The artwork had been examined by experts from the ministry and determined to be genuine and "of priceless value," Greek police spokesman Panagiotis Papapetropoulos said.

"The painting is being kept at the antiquities department of the greater Athens police," Papapetropoulos said.

One work that was stolen in 2001 in Belgium was an oil sketch attributed to Rubens and snatched from the Fine Arts Museum in Ghent by three masked robbers. The thieves ripped "The Hunt for the Caledonian Wild Boar" from the wall, along with the more famous "Flagellation of Christ," but they dropped the latter during their escape.

The ministry and police said a second raid also conducted Thursday led to the arrest of another six Greeks and stolen antiquities: three prehistoric bronze items, a metal seal and a manuscript with Arabic script.

The ministry said it would publicly present the painting and other items at a later date, possibly next week. No further details were immediately available, and Belgian police had no immediate comment.

Mel Gibson has at last settled the rancorous custody and financial battle with his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child, reports People. After over a year of back-and-forth, Gibson agreed Wednesday to pay Oksana Grigorieva $750,000 over the next five years. The money will go toward care and education for Lucia, the former couple?s daughter, who will turn 2 in October. Under the deal, the actor and his ex will split custody equally as Grigorieva and Lucia continue to live in one of Gibson?s homes in Los Angeles. When Lucia turns 18,?Gibson will sell the house and put the proceeds in a trust for her. The settlement, which also put to rest a civil suit Grigorieva threatened against Gibson, prohibits both Gibson and Grigorieva from speaking about each other or their relationship publicly. Gibson told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter D. Lichtman, ?Thanks, your honor, for bringing this case to a reasonable conclusion.?

If you?re looking for an unusual, beautiful perennial that?s easy to grow, try an ornamental oregano or two.

After first noticing one many years ago in Tim and Laura Spear?s pollinator-friendly Forest Edge Gardens north of Colorado Springs, I now have five different cultivars in my garden. They never fail to attract visitors? attention.

Ornamental beauty

Some ornamental oreganos have flowers similar to the culinary varieties, but my favorites have tiny pink or purple florets peeking out of prominent papery bracts that cascade over rocks in the garden and jiggle like candelabras on branched stems in a vase.

Origanum libanoticum, the Lebanese or hopflower oregano [see second photo above; click on arrow at right base of first photo], has narrow, chartreuse, shrimplike bracts with small, protruding lavender flowers.

Always ahead of the curve, Panayoti Kelaidis (senior curator and director of outreach at the Denver Botanic Gardens) planted it more than 30 years ago at the entrance to the Rock Alpine Garden, where the original specimen still thrives.

Deep rosy-red ?Pilgrim? has an upright growth habit, striking against my starry, silvery blue eryngium. [See first photo at left.] Much of mine has sprawled out, maybe because it only gets five hours of full sun.

Lime-green Origanum acutidens is especially lovely tumbling over red sandstone boulders and hybrid ?Amethyst Falls? is another cascading type with loads of bright pink flowers poking out of chartreuse bracts. The lavender-rose bracts of Origanum X suendermannii are also very showy.

?Kent Beauty? was the first to be available in the trade. It has bushy, pale green and mauve bracts that are long-lasting in the garden and as a cut flower. [See first photo above for Kent Beauty in the garden and the second photo at left for it as a cut flower.] In fact, displayed in a vase it?s easier to see the beautiful whorled form and the silver veining in its leaves.

Most of the ornamental oreganos with flower bracts have blue-green foliage, and some are fragrant or aromatic.

They resemble the darker pink, fuzzy-leaved (now rare) wildflower, Dittany of Crete (Origanum dictanunus), famous for what are considered healing, aphrodisiac, and magical properties. Woe to any plant known as a sexual enhancer, but fortunately, this endangered and protected plant once known as ?the gift of the gods? is now under cultivation mostly in Greece, the only place where it grows wild -- on hard-to-reach, rocky cliffs.

There is also some limited cultivation elsewhere, including in the United States. Dittany of Crete is hardy only to Zone 7, while the others mentioned here are all hardy to Zones 4 or 5.

How to grow

These oreganos like full sun and aren?t fussy about soil as long as isn?t too rich and it drains well. They prefer winters on the dry side, as we usually have in the West, and they like to dry out between waterings. Once established, they are drought-tolerant. Mine are not irrigated, and I don?t water them unless conditions are very dry.

While deer and rabbits avoid them, bees love all oreganos, those with flower bracts are favored by bumblebees. Other cultivars with flowers similar to Italian and Greek oreganos (the best culinary types, which have white flowers) are bee and butterfly magnets, including ?Herrenhausen,? hardy to -30?F., and the rosier, more floriferous, and compact ?Rotkugel.? These can also handle more water and wetter winters.

The common purple-flowered oregano, Origanum vulgare, brought to North America by European immigrants, is considered a highly medicinal plant. It?s also invasive and has naturalized in parts of the US and Mexico. The prettier ornamentals are much better behaved and will provide many years of delight in the garden.

Woman begged 911 for help before her slaying

In February, the 42-year-old Deltona, Fla., woman had filed domestic battery charges against her estranged husband.

Dwayne White was going to kill her the next time he saw her, she told investigators back in February, showing them her neck, red and swollen from White allegedly trying to strangle her.

"I'm as good as dead," Rucker had told sheriff's investigators at the time, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

It wasn't the first time deputies had been called to Rucker's Deltona home for domestic abuse incidents, Volusia County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Gary Davidson told msnbc.com.

After pressing felony charges over the February incident, Rucker resumed her life as a surgical technician and a mother of four.

On Monday morning, she was discovered stabbed to death in a restaurant parking lot, and her actions before her death have left officials mystified.

'How long have I been talking to you?'
Hours before authorities discovered her body, Rucker had called 911 from her work cell phone. The call disconnected twice; in one instance, dispatchers heard Rucker screaming in the background but the call hung up before she could say anything, Davidson told msnbc.com. When dispatchers called back, they got her voicemail.

"At that point, we have no idea where she is or who is calling us," Davidson said of the brief 911 calls from Rucker's cell phone, which couldn't be tracked to a specific location.

Rucker then called again from her home phone, and told the dispatcher White had showed up at her house, shoved her to the ground, and tried to hit her with a Heineken bottle. White had fled by the time she placed the call.

"He just came, knocked me down, threw the beer on me, and took my phone because I called the police," Rucker told the dispatcher. "He's not supposed to be here. He just got out of jail for doing this to me."

Rucker was on-call for work that night.

"I need my phone. You just don't understand. I work at the hospital," Rucker said.

At one point during her 911 call, Rucker interrupted. "How long have I been talking to you? I could be dead," she said, according to WKMG in Orlando.

Help was on the way
What Rucker didn't know at that point was officials had already traced her address and had sent a deputy to her neighborhood. The deputy was blocks away, searching for signs of White or his car.

"The first priority is to search for the suspect and his vehicle and make sure he's not still in the neighborhood, lurking about," Davidson told msnbc.com. Rucker was "understandably frustrated" that a deputy wasn't at her house yet, Davidson said, but she wasn't aware that deputies had already sprung into action, and were already on the case.

"I'm going to go find him myself," an exasperated Rucker then said on the 911 call, according to WFTV.com.

"No, no. You don't need to go after him," the dispatcher responded.

Volusia deputies then arrived at her home and wrote up a report.

"Then they searched for the suspect and his vehicle, and continued to look for him until the victim later turned up dead," Davidson said.

That was four hours later, around 5:30 a.m. Monday, at a Miami Subs parking lot in Longwood, Fla. Rucker had stab wounds to her neck and face.

"There were many of them, so it was a very violent death with a sharp-edged weapon like a knife," Seminole sheriff's Lt. James Clark told Daytona's News-Journal.

Officials are baffled as to how Rucker got to Longwood, which is in Seminole, the next county over. Seminole deputies ? who had no reason to be aware of Rucker's 911 calls with Volusia County ? found Rucker's body, clad in pajamas, after a suspicious-person call came in from Longwood.

"I can't speak to why she left her house and met up with the husband," Davidson said. "Why did she leave her house? Did she knowingly put herself in harm's way? I think these are questions that need to be asked."

Investigators believe Rucker was in Seminole County and ran into White there, according to the News-Journal. Clark said White likely then took her to the sub shop parking lot and carried out the homicide there. They don't know what Rucker's reasons for going to Seminole County were.

After Rucker's body was found, Seminole County deputies started their investigation.

"Initially, we were trying to develop information on a possible suspect," Kim Cannaday, Seminole County public information specialist, told msnbc.com. "Then we were made aware of the incident that occurred in Volusia County just hours before the homicide occurred. That's when White became our primary suspect."

White was later found at a girlfriend's house. Investigators charged him with first-degree murder and jailed him at Volusia County Branch Jail with no option for bail. He is being held in Volusia on domestic battery charges, but will also be charged with murder in Seminole County, Cannaday told msnbc.com.

Newly Discovered Hawaiian Bird Could Already Be Extinct

Here?s something amazing: a new bird species has been discovered in the U.S. for the first time since 1974. Unfortunately, the discovery wasn?t a live bird. It was actually a museum sample collected in 1963, and the scientists who discovered it fear it may already be extinct or threatened with extinction.

The specimen was collected on Midway Atoll nearly 40 years ago, at which time it was identified as a little shearwater (Puffinus assimilis). But Peter Pyle, an ornithologist at the Institute for Bird Populations in Marin County, Calif., examined the sample several years ago while assembling a monograph on Hawaiian birds and thought it might be another species, the Boyd?s shearwater (P. boydi). But even that assessment didn?t seem right to Pyle, since the sample had a shorter wingspan and tail than the Boyd?s.

DNA analysis by scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va., revealed that it was indeed a new species. It has since been named Bryan?s shearwater (P. bryani). The discovery is detailed in the May 2011 issue of The Condor.

The discovery of this new species reveals less information than is needed for effective conservation, unfortunately. No one knows where the birds live or breed, how many there are, or what could be done to preserve them. ?We don?t believe that Bryan?s shearwaters breed regularly on Midway or other northwestern Hawaiian islands, based on the extensive seabird work in these islands during the Pacific Seabird Project,? Pyle said in a prepared statement.

Locating the species in the wild is the next important step. ?If we can find where this species breeds, we may have a chance to protect it and keep it from going extinct,? said Smithsonian predoctoral fellow Andreanna Welch, who helped conduct the DNA analysis that revealed the new species.

A second Bryan?s shearwater specimen was collected on Midway in 1990 (in fact, that?s the bird you see in the photograph accompanying this article), and Pyle theorizes that other, unidentified birds seen around the Pacific could be the same one.
